Question about vaccinations

I have question about taking my puppy out in public while still getting vaccinations. I was warned by my vet and others not to take her out to the pet store, dog park, or around unknown dogs until her shots are complete. She is three months old, and has had the first two rounds at the vet, and will have another round in a couple of weeks. Is rabies done at another visit usually? Is okay then for her debut?! Should I still wait a while? I really want to get her into puppy school and get her really socialized. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks!

I THINK the final round is at about 4 months old and I THINK the rabies shot is in that final round at about 4 months. I would hold off on taking her out and about until she is fully vaccinated, just to make sure she doesn't get sick!

It's different here in the UK, we only have two multi jabs. The first can be as early as 7 weeks old and the second 3 weeks thereafter. Then we wait another 2 week, before they go out. So they can be as young as 12 weeks, when they're ready for the big wide world.

By many names depending on the situation?
Good Day and great question~

Be sure and check in the VET section for other posts and answers as well. For my answer, which is opinion based on many years of ownership and breeding, I STRONGLY suggest and encourage you to NOT go to any of these places.

A puppy gets immunity from the colostrum from the mom and is only immunized from those which the mom has been immunized against. (see article: Colostrum and Passive Immunity in Dogs).

"Puppies must get their colostrum from the bitch within their first 12 hours of life. If necessary, colostrum should be expressed from the bitch's breasts and fed by dropper to each puppy to ensure this. A puppy cannot get colostrum from another bitch with an older litter. It is only produced by the dam for a short time after she whelps, and it can only be passed through the puppies intestinal mucosa in the active form for the first few hours of life. If a puppy doesn't get colostrum, it will be much more susceptible to infections."

As the puppy grows, the new born immunities start to wear off and become less effective. There are many discussions as to when to start vaccinations. Some as early as 4 weeks, others at 6 or 8, and some as late as 9 or 10. This is refered to as the window of susceptibility and this is the time when puppies are MOST vulnerable. (Vaccination Recommendations for Puppies (Puppy Shots)). The timming of when the mother's immunity wears off and when to give vaccincations is the timming issue.

So until your puppy has had ALL of the shots, there is a BIG risk of diseases, sickness and infection from any place.

I tell my people no parks and if you take your puppy to the pet store (of course to show off how adorable your Bullie is  ) to NOT let them walk on the floor or ride in the cart. CARRY your puppy in your arms while in the store. You have not idea of what irresponsible pet owner has not vaccinated thier dog and is spreading germs, diseases and sickness around for others to get.

No, I am not a germaphob. Just a very proctective owner and breeder.
G'day~

Thanks everyone! That's what I thought, but I'm walking that fine line of waiting until she's fully vaccinated, but trying to make sure she's exposed to enough while she's young. Patience is the word of the day, I guess! Another month and we'll be set! We have taken her to the pet store, but only while carrying her! She's 20 lbs now, so that's getting tough! She sure does draw a crowd. We were surrounded last weekend!

I haven't taken the boys to the dog park or the pet stores yet, but Oliver did attend his first puppy class this past weekend and he gets his final shots next week, and my vet's office was wondering if I wanted to give him the bordatello shot and I think I'm going to go ahead and do it since he's in school.

In my opinion..yes to bordatello. Just puppy class would warrant it..my vet said especially bullies because of their short snouts..they inhale just to smell. Jake got a 2 dose nasal spray. Immediate protection.

Parvo is what really scares me... My vet warned me to wait 1 week after the last series of shots to let the pup out in public, but the following info I copied from wiki says it takes 2 weeks for the shot to reach effective levels of immunity. Also interesting that Parvo can remain in the soil for up to a year. That's just too risky to not wait.

Prevention is the only way to ensure that a puppy or dog remains healthy because the disease is extremely virulent and contagious. The virus is extremely hardy and has been found to survive in feces and other organic material such as soil for over a year. It survives extremely cold and hot temperatures. The only household disinfectant that kills the virus is bleach.[20]

Puppies are generally vaccinated in a series of doses, extending from the earliest time that the immunity derived from the mother wears off until after that passive immunity is definitely gone.[26] Older puppies (16 weeks or older) are given 3 vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart.[21] The duration of immunity of vaccines for CPV2 has been tested for all major vaccine manufacturers in the United States and has been found to be at least three years after the initial puppy series and a booster 1 year later.[27]

A dog that successfully recovers from CPV2 sheds the virus for a few days. Ongoing infection risk is primarily from fecal contamination of the environment due to the virus's ability to survive many months in the environment. Neighbours and family members with dogs should be notified of infected animals so that they can ensure that their dogs are vaccinated or tested for immunity. The vaccine will take up to 2 weeks to reach effective levels of immunity; the contagious individual should remain in quarantine until other animals are protected.[

Yes, WAIT! And Gator has his second dose of the bortodello on Saturday when we have his neuter stitches out. If you want to socialize, maybe you could invite people over.

your bullys have a wide range of injections, ours have 2 lots then walkies,i have always taken mine out after the first shots to start them early with socialising i do this as i had a long chat with a lady from the guide dogs, they train dogs for the blind, they start walking their dogs after the first injections as they believe the risk is minimal, also dog deseases are more often than not brought into homes on peoples shoes ,but this is just the way i do it ,karen
