Major been gagging/coughing all day so took him to the vet,
He got diagnosed with ( lung lesions, cranial lung field soft tissue density, enlarged heart areas of spondylosis dedormans observed), white blood counts at 17. Plus lower back arthritis . He's also been dealing with dry eyes n losing vision both of his eyes.
They gave him salix to take now and for the rest of whatever time he have left. Have anyone been through this? And what else can i do to make his life lil easier. Thank you

So sorry to hear. I tagged Lalaloopsie as well. Sounds like he has congestive heart failure, and maybe aspiration pneumonia. Is he on any antibiotics like amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for the pneumonia? The furosemide should help remove fluid and there are a lot of other meds besides just furosemide that they can add for congestive heart failure that could extend his life for years. Also, he will lose a lot of potassium with the furosemide, so he may need a potassium supplement.

They just gave him salix to take for the fluid, should I ask for something else? I do give him banana and sweet potatoes as treats, I might need to up more then.

Maybe he needs a specialist? They can add some combination of furosemide, ace inhibitor, digoxin, pimobendan, beta blocker, spironolactone, and I'm not sure if they are using entresto in dogs instead of acei like they are in humans now.

I am so sorry. Big hugs to Major from Buster and I.

When Chumly had CHF, they had him on about 4 different drugs, Furosemide, Vetmedin, Enalapril and Spironolactone. This was several years ago so there may be newer drugs now. He had a very poor prognosis when we found out about the heart condition but they did help stabilize him and all things considered, he did well. You would not have known how ill he was. We are eternally grateful for that.

Did chumly then have a lot of fluid around his lung bc of chf? Did the meds take the fluid out or he have to deal with it ? Thank you

IIRC we had to have it drained a couple of times at first but then it settled down. He never had a cough which I believe most dogs do with CHF.

A specialist is essential to getting the right amount of the right medications to give the patient the most time possible. Enlarged heart can be managed for a long time...with meds like DollysOwner mentioned. We’ve had a few of our own that had Enlarged Heart/CHF and with specialized treatment they can live years...depending on how advanced things are when first diagnosed.
Please keep us informed.
