Oh, what to believe about entropion

First of all, I'm so sorry you are dealing w/this... eye issues are common for bulldogs. I have dealt w/several bullies having eye issues and/or surgeries... since your vets seem to be at different opinions I would see an eye specialist for the diagnosis. IF he does need surgery, then I would only allow it to be done by whomever has the most expeirence w/brac breeds. Please DO not allow just anyone to do surgery on your bulldog, anesthesia can be very tricky for bulldogs.

Thanks for the reply. I think the anesthesia isore frightening than the surgery. I think you are spot on about enlisting an opinion from an eye specialist. Now to find one in Arkansas...

I deleted most of what was a long post that perhaps strayed off topic into "why am I getting so many different opinions" and why is it so hard to convince my vet(s) that while entropion is a developing issue here, the immediate problem is that my pup injured his eye and my immediate concern is for the acute injury rather than the chronic one.
Never having had a Bulldog, I am quite distressed and confused.

OK I see what you’re saying it could be the entropion is actually being caused by the acute problem and the vet maybe wanting to handle the entropion and that will then lesson the other issue. Do you know what the other issue is have they said?

Have you been to an eye specialist or just your vet?

You have got to find a Veterinarian that you totally trust.My Vet is totally experienced with bulldogs and people bring their bulldogs from hours away,but he is in Tn.. I had two Bullies that he did entropion surgery on, and they had no pain and no meds, but did have to wear a cone for 2 weeks. You need to fine a Veteranarian who is experienced with English Bulldogs-or Specialist who knows EBD's, as the anaestetic/method is extremely important-these are some you might question. Don't know where you live....

I think you're right about the acute injury exacerbating the entropion. If you saw pictures of Otis prior to this most recent injury you would see a very clear-eyed dog. I hate to have him in pain any longer than necessary but am not feeling comfortable about this planned surgery tomorrow. Primarily because no one seems to be listening to me about this eye. The vet that I go to is very well acquainted with bulldogs and their specific needs with regard to anesthesia so I'm comfortable with that. And I think that probably the acute injury caused entropion is blowing back to make the acute injury worse. I've not lived in Arkansas two terribly long, one and a half dog years / nine years.
Someone posted a list of vets in Arkansas that are Bulldog acquainted and I think I will call around tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I will keep you all posted and thank you so much for the advice. I feel this community can talk the most novice of Bully owner off a very high ledge...
I just hate to see anything other than my happy little Otis and right now he's pretty glum.

You asked about the other issue. The vet called it a non healing ulceration...but since he had recently started in with the injury symptoms (within a few days of this diagnosis, within hours if first being seen) I don't k ow what the criteria is for "non healing" as the injury was less than 3 days old.

Surgical pain will be minimal and short lived. The relief will be nearly immediate and long lasting and totally respective of how much discomfort was caused by the entropion.
Do not give in to cone removal. Just deal with it.

Thank you so much as I am stressing out here! We will go in tomorrow and talk to the vet. I believe I am inadvertently caught between a New way, Old way between vet's. I know both of their intentions are good and both with my dog's interest at heart. Just two different methodologies. Just too bad they are in the same practice!
BTW, how do I get Otis' picture on my profile? And since I am cornering the market on cones, collars, other devices to keep the eyes safe, do any of you have a preference? Otis alternates between looking like a satellite dish or a Titanic survivor...

Just an update on Otis. I had the entropion surgery on Monday. Thus far he seems to be doing well, is comfortable (I keep reminding myself of [MENTION=15364]oscarmayer[/MENTION]'s statement to leave the cone on, not to relent.)
