Hi there! Would love your help and opinions. I have a bulldog rocky (2yrs old) who keeps getting ulcers on and off and has been seeing an eye specialist(eye care for animals) for some other issues. We saw our normal vet for a checkup who works with a lot of bulldogs and he told us rocky needs entropion surgery and is pushing us to do it quickly and recommended another Dr for us to use. We had a consult with her and she is just a general dr/surgeon but says she does these a couple times a month. She takes the skin from the lower eyelid and does the surgery that way. Then we decided to get another opinion from another vet who has bulldogs himself and works on a lot of bulldogs and he says he does the surgery differently. He pulls the skin from lower on the cheek and not the eyelid. He says he doesn’t like to do the surgery from the eyelid because he says it bothers the dogs so much and they usually are miserable and try to scratch it. But he says they will have a scar. We are also getting another opinion from his Dr at the eye care for animals to see how they do it but I do know they are about $2500 or so to do it. We already had another surgery with them (distichia) and know they are good but wondered if it is okay to do it with a general surgeon and not an eye surgeon? Also if anyone has had any experience with this, where did they do the cutting? It scares me to do it lower and don’t know if that is the norm? Don’t want a scar. Thank you!!

My regular veterinarian,(who is great with all animals, and has bulldogs) did entropion surgery on two of my Bullies. He did it around the eyes, and they had stitches and had to wear a cone for two weeks. All went well and they had no problems. I personally have never heard of doing down lower down on the face. The cone also keeps them from messing with the eyes. I totally trust my Vet, and you need someone you trust. Best of luck to you!

I have never heard of them taking pulling skin from other areas... I'm only aware of them doing it around the eyelid. They give you meds to keep it comfortable for them, and wearing the cone helps w/the healing process. PLEASE just make double sure that whomever you decide to do the procedure is VERY familiar w/doing surgery on bulldogs.

Thank you for your help ddnene Manydogs 2BullyMama we just did his surgery yesterday. Our eye specialist said it was okay to use a regular vet with experience so we used one who does this surgery and is familiar with bulldogs. She did it the typical way, from the eyelids. He's doing good. Recovering. Thank you.

Glad to hear that. Our bulldog had to have this surgery twice due to our regular vet overcorrecting the issue so we had to take him to a veterinarian opthomologist to have it corrected. He is doing well now and no more ulcers for over a year.
