We have been having a time with our sweet Poppy! There is a definite learning curve to English bulldogs and learning your puppy in general. Since Poppy has come to live with us she has had what I will call generalized skin issues. Random flakey skin, some crusty scabs, itching, and then a red oozy crusty sore that popped up almost overnight on her head. We have been to the vet a few times having her looked at and evaluated. The last time was with the red crusty sore and to evaluate all the random crusty bits on her neck and itching. The doctor said it appears to be environmental allergies and gave us cephalexin and some allergy medicine (canā€™t remember the name off the top of my head). It worked wonders! No more itching, all the skin issues cleared up, she was a new dog.

We finished them end of last week and starting 2ish days later she had a scaly yellow crusty rash on her neck folds and ā€œarmpitsā€. I put nu-stock on it and bathed her in duoxo Chlorhexidine shampoo but it didnā€™t seem to do much. I am sure this is yeast. We were moving house over the weekend and with all the chaos and people helping us she didnā€™t get her Kefir or coconut oil rubs for a few days, plus she just finished antibiotics. I feel like the WORST dog mama.

So here we are with a yeast infection. Do they have to see a vet for this or is this something you can treat at home? Iā€™m trying to decide if I need to take the afternoon off from work and take her up to the vet. I read online that Miconazole cream can be used, so we bought some and we put that on since last night and already see a huge improvement. I just donā€™t want to go to the vet if the course of treatment is what we are already doing. Thanks for your input!

Did the vet do a skin scrape? Just to be sure it's not mange or staph...
I always make sure to give them a good probiotic while giving them antibiotics... vets seem to LOVE to dispense that out instead of figuring out the source of the problem.
What kind of dog food are you feeding her? Sometimes it's food related and sometimes it's environmental (or both)... it can be difficult to figure it out. I just had my Walter do allergy testing, we have had years of issues. I was getting him Cytopoint injections, and Xyzal on his really bad days.
IMO I would continue to treat him at home since you see an improvement, and see if you can pinpoint the source.

We ended up at the vet today. I have just been worried sick over this! Her neck was looking a lot better but there were red bumps traveling down her body. The vet gave us more antibiotics and a $50 cream! [emoji33] Poppy is just prone to skin conditions it seems! We have a follow up next week. I asked my husband if they did a scrape today but he wasnā€™t sure as they took her to the back. I will be calling to follow up on that. I am so unsure what to do for her! I feel so down because I am trying my absolute hardest to be the best mama to her. Giving her good quality food, high quality treats, daily kefir and pumpkin for her digestion (and because she loves it so much), coconut oil rubs and wipe downs nightly. We have started having to watch her when she drinks water to wipe her face after so maybe that will help some too. I am going to buy some Bubbies sauerkraut after work today. I give her allergy immune support chewables daily too. We have been doing duoxo Chlorhexidine shampoo on her every few weeks, maybe I should buy the wipes too. I just donā€™t know what else to do to take care of her. I feel like the next thing Iā€™m going to try to do is feeding raw. I am just unsure of what that cost will break down to and need to do some research. Sorry for rambling

The best way to treat a yeast infection is to figure out the cause. If you don't know the cause, it will just keep coming back. I have successfully gotten rid of yeast without a vet visit and antibiotics.

I used to give Jax a bath every week rotating between Ketohex and Chlorhexidine shampoos. I believe you can even give them twice a week as these shampoos should not dry out the skin.

What food do you feed? What treats?

Usually red oozy crusty sore is something your dog is touching like a dye or chemical. What do you use to wash his linens with or bedding etc...did you spray outside? Would need a specialist to check him out.

Stop ALL treats while you are fighting this issue. What are you feeding? Often times the ingredients in the food can cause/promote what you are experiencing. Sweet Potatoes are BAD for yeast! Some dogs do not tolerate certain proteins, other ingredients.
My guess is that you are fighting a bacterial infection(Staph). Keep dosing the prescribed antibiotics and increase shampooing to 1 per week. Always rinse thoroughly. After rinsing with water, rinse again with Apple Cider Vinegar...this will help combat yeast.
Once the coat is dry you can use Douxo Mousse. Apply it every other day to the affected area...use just a dab and rub it into the affected area(s).
Yeast infections are most often secondary infections and need to be dealt with differently. Ketoconazole is the pinnacle of yeast infection treatment. If the yeast gets out of hand you will be dosing this for a long time.
