Lola
Good evening.
Sorry for the following essay.

I have posted on here before about Lola's skin.

A few weeks ago it got worse and worse. Her skin was red/pink and with small raised lumps that were red.
Some lumps were scabby also. It was mainly located on her shoulder.
After 4 visits to the vets they decided it was her diet and suggested (Fishmongers finest) that helps with skin conditions.

Lola struggles to eat it and when she finally manages to eat it her stomach rumbles like she has an upset stomach.
I must admit, since changing her food her skin has improved, but it's still pink on her shoulder but doesn't look as aggressive as before.

She has some scabby lumps around her back and her skin is really sensitive on her lower back. She will twitch/shudder when touched sometimes.

I'm completely lost with her diet.
I have tried 3/4 different types now.

She had Royal Canine Bulldog since she was born. We only changed her diet because she had tear staining.
Her skin and coat used to be beautiful. She would shine and looked so healthy.
Her nose rope was clear and healthy as well, where as now it's pink/red and looks sore sometimes.

Should I go back to Royal Canine?

I can't afford to keep going backwards and forwards to the vets to be told things I already know.
The last tablets she had did nothing at all, the time before she had steroids which cleared everything up but as soon as she came off them
she went back to the way she was before them.

She obviously hates the food we give her now, and looks so miserable sometimes.
The only fortunate thing is that she isn't scratching.

I really need some help with this.
I have people giving me mixed reviews on Royal Canine Bulldog, but she looked so healthy and was so happy on that diet.

Sorry for the essay, but I chose a bulldog because I wanted to give her a happy and healthy life. She means the world to me.

Vhoas hang on as not very clear...so....

Let’s start with these questions so it’s clearer to all of us. :)

How old is your dog

When did you take her off RC age....

What have you been feeding her right after RC, is it the same kibble, if not tell us the brands n how long she’s been on them

steroids, how long she’s been on the and how many times she’s taken it

Bare in mind steroids will destroy an immune system. :(

She is almost 2 now.
She came off of RC in September.
She started having Wainwright’s salmon and potatoes I think it was.
Her nose rope became that bad that we changed to turkey and rice.
We sampled a different salmon and potatoes but we had the same problem.

She was only on steroids for a week. I have some more that the vets
gave to help her but I’m reluctant to let her have them because of
her immune system.

She has tiny bumps all over her back. Some are scabbed over
and some aren’t. Her skin has got slightly better since changing to
Fishmongers finest that was suggested by our vet but she still has
these bumps and slight pinking of the skin on her neck/shoulder.

I forgot to say she did have bald spots but they have gone now.
Her fur just looks rough and dull compared to what it was like
on RC.

Ok... she is allergic to something in the food. Does Wainwright’s have a duck grain free blend? Or can you get James Well beloved.. duck?

Stay away from grains and white potatoes they add to the issues.

Yes like Christine said you need to remove the potatoes, rice or basically anything that is starch. Below is your ingredients...

White Fish 60% (White Fish 28%, Fish Meal 22%, Fish Oil 8%, Fish Digest 2%), Potato 32%, Beet Pulp, Brewers Yeast, Minerals, Prebiotics Mannanoligosaccharides (430 mg/kg) and Fructooligosaccharide (430mg/kg), Yucca Schidigera Extract (220 mg/kg), Glucosamine (172mg/kg), Chondroitin (86mg/kg).

Potatoes n beet pulp too starchy for your dog. Fructooligosaccharide is basically as follows:

Fructooligosaccharides also sometimes called oligofructose or oligofructan, are oligosaccharide fructans, used as an alternative sweetener. FOS exhibits sweetness levels between 30 and 50 percent of sugar in commercially prepared syrups

Commercial prepared syrup is not healthy for humans let alone dogs. From my understanding UK does have Acana kibbles. I don’t know what area you are but if you can find Acana, why not start one one protein per bag. If you can’t find it go raw. You guys in UK have great corner butcher that’s not too expensive. Also your bag you’re buying is 3.7 / 5 stars. You need to find minimum 4 stars n up. Below is a UK link like our dog food advisor we have here on the western side. Check it out and search for a quality kibble 4 stars and up. But whatever you do, don’t go back to RC. You need to find a proper grain free kibbles if you’re going to stick to kibbles. Your second post sounds a bit better than your question. So you’re doing ok just don’t discourage yourself as it’s so not “one kibble fits all”. Doesn’t work like that. Trust me we all wish it was.

Honey
Most of the dry dog foods will have carbs, so the safest way to avoid carbs would be to get PREY diet frozen raw, ie. just ground up muscle meat, organ meat and bones in a 80/10/10 % ratio. Add to that some steamed green beans, sea kelp https://www.amazon.co.uk/JustIngredients-09KE_1kg-Essentials-Kelp-Powder/dp/B00I9WWUH2/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1547602490&sr=1-1&keywords=ascophyllum+nodosum, and fish oil https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grizzly-Salmon-Oil-Dogs-500/dp/B0053PE1HA/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1547602565&sr=1-2&keywords=grizzly+salmon+oil or some frozen sprat on your own to make it complete.

I'm not sure where you can buy ground up frozen raw dog food in UK, but I'm sure there are local suppliers. Later on when the allergies are gone try buying a BARF diet ground up raw ( has the PREY ingredients PLUS vegetables, kelp and fish oil added ).

Vhoas Here’s a link where to buy Acana in UK. Simply add your postal code and it will tell you the nearest place. Again stick to ONE protein per bag. I personally would start with the Duck. Take it from there. See how she does with the Duck.

I have had a quick look and I can’t see any with just duck as the protein.

I don’t understand what is so bad about RC?
The breeder feeds her 3 bullies RC, so does my friend at work.

Lola loved the food and her skin and coat always looked incredible.

Here in the US and Canada... RC is all fillers and very little meat/protein. Is the ingredients list different in UK?

I’ll try and find the ingredients.

But our vet is known as the ‘bullgod’ in the UK.
People travel from Ireland just to see him.

He highly recommends RC.
5 different breeders I have spoken to recommend it.

The only reason I took her off RC was to try and beat
her tear stains. But everything has gotten worse since taking
her off RC.

I used to soak the food in water for about 30 minutes.
I’d drain the water then feed her and she loved it.

Perfect weight, her skin (nose rope included) was flawless.
I regret taking her off of RC now.

Punk is on RC and has been since birth. She is 9.5 years old now going on 1. . . She has had no problems with RC. Her coat is shiny and she is very healthy. You can try RC again and see if she responds favorably, if not, then you will know for sure that the RC was not for her.

Thank you for this.

I totally understand other owners have their own opinion on diets and I respect that.
Some dogs might not like RC or the food itself doesn't agree with them.

I have tried other foods suggested where their dogs have been in perfect health but my Lola has struggled and I hate seeing her
this miserable.
When I put her bowl of food down she looks at me with disappointment. Takes her a long time to eat it as well.

When she was on RC she would jump and run around with excitement :D

I think I will be trying it again.

At the end of the day, it’s your dog n you do whatever you want. Here on this side of the planet RC got caught adding feathers as fillers and vets gets all a % commission for each bag they sell. I personally would never feed any dogs RC as it’s simply ALL grains. I’m feeding dogs/carnivores not cows. Again at the end of the day, it’s your decision not ours.

Do as you feel best... we are here to support and provide insight/suggestions. Each dog is different ..

Here in US vets tend to get $$ from those companies that they recommend and sell in their offices and in most case vets have no time for nutritional knowledge and just recommend what they sell.
