Lola
Hello all.

Lolaā€™s tail pocket will always be a concern to me.
I try to clean it atleast every week and when I do itā€™s not
usually too bad.

Since changing her diet from Royal Canine to Wainwrightā€™s the
red/brown colours have gone after I clean her but now
it smells worse and I canā€™t get rid of it.

Lola has a thing about dragging her ā€˜rumpā€™ on the stairs.
When I clean a certain area she will snap and runs off.

There is no redness from what I can see, nothing else seems different.

She definitely scoots a lot less since changing her food.
But Iā€™m concerned when I try to clean a certain area.

Iā€™ve read many different causes and problems but none make sense.
Iā€™m 90% sure she doesnā€™t have an infection.
And as I said she hasnā€™t changed at all and doesnā€™t seem bothered by her tail pocket unless I
clean that certain area.

I gave her a long soak in the bath then cleaned her again this morning and
it still stank but the wipes are clean after I cleaned her bum.

Iā€™m hoping to get her to the vet just to be sure but obviously with Christmas and
house bills Iā€™m counting my pennies and working 7 days a week.

Sheā€™s my baby so I will always do what it takes to
make sure she is healthy.

Any advice or suggestions from anyone would be hugely appreciated.

Tom & Lola.

I don't think that allergies cause tail pocket problems, since it's an anatomical issue, so keep it clean and dry, preferably clean and dry out after each poo. As mentioned above, you can wipe it down as deep as possible with a paper towel with witch hazel on it. If it's red, put on some antibiotic cream after until it's better. if that doesn't work you could try putting some chlorhexidine shampoo or essential oils on a baby wipe, and drying after. See this discussion http://www.englishbulldognews.com/forums/your-bulldog-s-health/59259-tail-pocket.html

If you are worried about allergies, try switching to a cold pressed dog food like Tribal grain free turkey or salmon. It doesn't contain protein meal like most cold pressed dog foods, which is the protein processed at high temperatures until it becomes a meal. Or even better, switch to frozen raw.

Dollys Owner got you cover.. and we did cover you on what kind of essential oil mix to use. Again Iā€™m extremely serious, this mixture works. You want to get rid of that problem, do that mix. Nyala has had a pocket issue since a pup. She 3now n I clean it less n less nowadays. Up to you.

I will try it.
What I forgot to mention was that her nose rope
has gone from being perfect to red and gunky now.

Thatā€™s ever since we changed her diet.
Thought itā€™s abit of a coincidence that rump and face
have gone from being clean and healthy to smelly etc.

The skin around her nose has gone a pink/red and we clean out white
gunk from under her nose rope.

I was also thinking I wonder if she has irritated her own bum
By dragging it on the stairs so much?

When Monty had his tail pocket problem, we had to clean it after every poo. Poor dog! It would constantly get infected and smelly and cleaning it that often was the only way to keep it under control... kind of. The end result was surgery where his pocket was 'corrected'. It sounds like she could have a yeast infection so maybe a vet visit is in order.

She has the lamb and vegetables food.

Iā€™m tempted to swap it back to royal canine.
I know itā€™s more of a pain when we have to soak it
and wait until itā€™s soft but if it helps her then Iā€™ll have to do it.

If you could that would be great!
I have been looking at pets at home tonight and I have no idea which is best
for her.

Iā€™d only put her back on RC because she had a lovely coat, nose rope was
beautiful and she did love it.
The breeder also recommended it, and she is a very experienced breeder.

Iā€™ve looked at wainwrightā€™s, James Wellbeloved, RC, ACA, and barking heads.
Iā€™ve got no idea why her nose rope has gone red and gunky, I keep on top of cleaning it
and it doesnā€™t cause her any bother but Iā€™m confused most about her rump.
Iā€™m guessing she has carpet burn which is why she snaps sometimes when I clean
a certain area but it doesnā€™t look red or infected.

Some bulldogs are allergic to lamb, so definitely switch- duck is a great protein to try as mentioned. Frozen raw is the best but not convenient. Why don't you give the Primal brand cold pressed a try, or even better, Pure brand dehydrated raw.Nose rope problems are definitely allergy related. I think the best treatment for a really red nose rope is with chlorhexidine/ketoconazole shampoo. I don't think it's easy to get the mixture in England, so try chlorhexidine dog shampoo. I do it in 4 steps:
1) Wet a round cosmetic pad and add a dab of shampoo. Clean out rope with the pad
2) Clean out rope with a second cosmetic pad with just water
3) Dry out rope with a third cosmetic pad
4) Apply Sudocreme if really red

I have mentioned raw diet before to my partner but
with our working schedules and other things it would be
really difficult.

I will be changing from lamb.

Her rope isnā€™t affecting her. Itā€™s red but I donā€™t think it sore.
I will be getting some witch hazel as soon as I can.

I donā€™t even think itā€™s a yeast thing, I have no idea.
Nothing bothers her.

Like I said she will let me know when she really needs a clean.
She will run around and hide after because something is sore
but her pocket isnā€™t red or looking any different, she has always been like
that. After about 10 minutes sheā€™s back to normal.

Every time she goes outside I wipe her ā€˜bitsā€™.
Iā€™m going to change her food from lamb and vegetables and try
witch hazel.

She nose looks better, but when she gets hot it looks worse.
I just make sure it stays clean and dry.
