Hi! Well we finally got Barkleyā€™s Entropion fixed in his right eye today! Everything went well but now Iā€™m worried about the recovery part.

The vet said he shouldnā€™t need a cone, they donā€™t usually use them for bulldogs (they are bulldog specialist vets) but since we have been home he has tried scratching his eye a few times. I went out and got a soft cone but since I had to get the biggest size to fit his neck, it is wayyyy too long for his head and also he canā€™t fit in his crate with it on.

Iā€™m also going to call the vet in the morning to see how I can tell if he messes up the stitches (I think he might have scratched his face/eye one time in the half second I turned my back!).

Has anyone used a good cone or something else that works better for bulldogs? Do those inflatable donut looking ones work well at all?

Thanks for any advice!! [emoji4]

For Nyala's cherry eye she had the normal white plastic cone. Worked well

Yes two of mine had entropion surgery and both wore the plastic cone for two weeks. First two days were hard, but then they got the hang of it. Also if they are too long, you can cut them. Maybe you can cut your soft cone?

Yea Iā€™m thinking I need to go get a plastic one and cut it probably. Theyā€™ve never needed cones for other surgeries so I didnā€™t really think anything of it until I realized he could still reach his eye with his legs!

It's hard at first but any eye surgery, you so don't want them the scratch their eye or its going to be a longer healing time. My moto....suffer with the cone of shame for a couple weeks than go through the whole process all over again.

Yes definitely! I just went and got a plastic cone so hopefully this one works better. He usually sleeps in his crate but I slept on the couch with him last night so I could monitor him. Hopefully this cone works so I can get some actual sleep tonight!! [emoji31]

Nyala would purposely bang into walls, use it as a shovel just trying to remove it. So you still need to watch him.

Oh yea, he can be a jerk so Iā€™m sure he will try everything haha. I work from home at least so am able to keep a pretty good eye on him most of the time [emoji4]

How did it go last night? I've heard good things about the inflatable cones but never used one myself

Ahhh I got a regular cone but thatā€™s not working so well either. He just non-stop tries to get it off and keeps managing to no matter if I attach it to his collar or not! I was having to watch him more with it on than without so am just keeping a close eye on him without the cone now. He does good when heā€™s in his crate and just sleeps and doesnā€™t mess with it so Iā€™ve been putting him in there if I canā€™t watch him for a few minutes. Hopefully after a few days when it has healed more he wonā€™t want to mess with it as much! I realized with the inflatable cone he could prob still try and rub his face on stuff so that prob wonā€™t work either [emoji20]

Sorry it didn't work out! You have a determined one there! There is another option-but he may not "agree" with it either!

Ughhh well I thought we were doing good today and he wasnā€™t messing with it. Then he goes into the other room for literally 2 seconds and I go in after him and heā€™s rubbing his eye on the wall!!! [emoji35][emoji35][emoji35] it was bleeding some but not a ton. Guess weā€™ll be making another vet trip in the morning to make sure he didnā€™t mess anything up! [emoji31][emoji31][emoji31]
