Cricket's scheduled for a vulvoplasty, entropion surgery, and extraction of 2 loose teeth (front lower incisors- she doesn't use these) all at once. (I do not want to put Cricket under general anesthesia any more times than what's absolutely necessary.. she does have a bulldog specialist working her case- I'm getting some peace with this. She's with Blue Ravine Animal Hospital in Folsom..)
Anyone have any experience with doing these procedures at the same time? Any tips?
Another thing. I cannot use an e-collar on Cricket. She can't handle it. She hates things over her head and on her back. Last time I put an e-collar on her, she panicked so badly she did a complete backflip and nearly hit her head- it was horrible. (If I didn't seee it actually happen, I'd be skeptical that a bulldog could do a backflip!) I'm thinking an inflatable Kong collar would work? I can't think of anything else that would keep her from getting at her eye stitches. I'm hoping someone here has suggestions/experience with both at the same time? .
Naturally, I will be keeping a close eye on her and have no intention of leaving her unsupervised until she has completely recovered. (Fortunately I'm a teacher and will be doing this during the last few weeks of my summer vacation).. but in the event something is needed, what would work?
TIA

well, my boy had the entropian, soft palate, and nares surgery all at the same time and i was sure i was suppose to use the collar for him. They said nope (everyone else i know has used something) and son of a gun, he never itched his nose or eye stitches! so, I have no idea why, but i trusted my vet and his advice and he was fine. I still ordered the blow up thing just in case but never needed it. Id follow your vets advice and hopefully, they, or someone here will also have an answer to dogs who just cant wear the collar..

My dogs have had multiple eye, nare and palate surgeries and neither one of them used the e-collar. I had gotten a blow up one, but I never used it. If you can keep an eye on them I wouldn't bother with it.

Castor (2013-2021 RIP)
Castor was supposed to go through entropion yesterday but his surgeon had to cancel unfoprtunately so we'll do it in August instead. She said he would need an e-collar and gave us one for practice (needless to say, Castor hasn't been too thrilled about it). I must say it's wonderful to hear it can be done without that gigantic cone of shame. We have been wondering how on earth to fit him into his safety cage in the car (the cone is really big!) going back home from the hospital...
Brilloluna when will Cricket have her surgery? Will be following this to prepare for Castor's surgery.

My girl had vulvoplasty surgery when she was about 2... she did not need a collar and it did not bother her until it started healing which it was itchy -- i put nepsporian on it to help so she did not try to scratch or rub her butt.
Let me know if you have any specific questions... happy to help

Jax had conjunctivitis a couple of years ago and was sent home in a giant plastic cone that was probably made for a large dog. I got him an inflatable cone instead and while he still hated it, I'm sure it was more comfortable than the plastic one. And he definitely had to wear one because he kept trying to rub his eyes on everything.

Daphne had vulvaplasty at the same time she was spayed. It was $250 and she did fine. We opted for the blow up Collar rather than Elizabethan Collar. What an improvement. Good luck.

That looks great so that dog won't rub eyes against floor. I know one time I put an Elizabethan collar on my dog and she went insane banging into everything till she knocked it off. I wonder if she would tolerate the Optivisor. That would be a great device for police dogs too.

Hi-
Cricket had her surgery yesterday- it went well. No major complications. However, she did regurgitate during surgery. They cleaned her up and the vet checked her lungs- no fluid... I have antibiotics, just in case. However, she hasn't been coughing or vomiting.
They took out a lot more skin than I thought they would.
She pooped last night, but I've yet to see her pee.
She's really sore, and her sedatives have really been helping her today. I'd feel better if she would just pee. Is that a silly concern? Any experience with this?
cricket after.jpg cricket before.JPG cricket drooling.jpg
sorry about the rotated photo- it's not rotated on my computer, and I don't know how to change it here. :) (the face photo was right after we got home and she'd had her meds- she fell asleep and started drooling- I couldn't help but chuckle at that one.)

She tried to rub her face a couple of times, but I've discovered that hollering "no!" will stop her pretty quickly!

Any tips on getting her to drink more water? I'm sure she'll feel better if she's hydrated??? or do I just need to chill? :nervous:

Honest Kitchen makes a bone broth, it's just a powder you mix with water. So you can add that to her food or just put in bowl for her to drink up. If she eats kibble, you can also add a little water to that as well.
