Cherry Eyes

Hi all, I wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with cherry eyes as us.

We adopted our puppy Romeo, a bulldog/basset hound mix, who came to us with cherry eyes in both of his eyes and got him the surgery immediately to tuck them back in as massaging those suckers back in was not going to happen. Anyways, we managed about a full month post opp where his eyes were perfectly fine but unfortunately they did manage to pop back out. I'm able to massage them back in easily every time it happens but the problem is how frequently they're popping out. It went from a few times a week to every morning, to now it's to the point where I'm having to massage them in multiple times a day!!

We already have him scheduled to go to the vets this week but has anyone had a similar experience like this with their pup? I would hate to have the gland removed since it can cause dry eyes later on down the road but I'm not sure what options we have left.

Well bless your hearts for adopting that sweet boy... I don't know about cherry eye but lots here do. Welcome, and oh my would I love to see that kid of yours!!! Hope that your/his problems is solved soon...

WELCOME! !!! Nyala had a cherry eye. Push it in, pops out, push it in poped out....I know.... so got it tucked in while she got spayed. Never popped out. But I did notice before surgery, if she got excited it popped out. You wont have much choice if you dont want him to live with the cherry eye but to have it remove. A few members had it done on their bullies. You basically have to put drop through their life time. If you type cherry eye in the search box above, you will have other's story.

Hi and Welcome! I'm actually going to have Ms Lady's eyes done. I went to an eye specialist with her and here's what he suggested..it's called the "pocket technique". He did say tucking them has a super high failure rate since the ligaments surrounding it are weak and the stitching usually doesn't hold. He discussed removal but said he has used the pocket technique with a 95% success rate over 14 years and more than likely won't need eye drops. That's the route we are going. If you google pocket technique you'll find exactly what it is. Fingers crossed

I have no experience, I will tag a few members with experience. but from what I have read of those with the issue, removal may be the only option because if the tacking did not hold, it may not be an option to do again.

I had my boys tacked 2x's and it failed both times. We finally just removed it. It's been about a year since the surgery and so far no issues with dry eye- my vet has since even done a tear test and he's producing plenty of tears. They do still have a tear duct on the upper lid that produces. His right eye pops a cherry every few days, but we are able to massage it back in. My vet and I have agreed that as long as we can massage it we won't do anything to it. But once it's out for good, I'll just remove it. I hated to put him through 2 extra surgeries.

Oh- after the 2nd surgery - that vet told us that the chances of failure get higher with each time they go in bc of scar tissue. Our first tack lasted a week, the 2nd lasted right at about a month before failure.

Also each tack was done by a different specialist also.

I have no personal experience with it but my breeders said removal is the best option, that with tacking it, it usually just comes back.
