Hi Patrick! It would help to know what's causing Maximus to lick his paw. I'm going through this with my girl Jersey and the vet believes it's a superficial infection. She's been on topical antibiotics, topical antifungals, antifungal baths... nothing seems to help. I tried apple cider vinegar and no change. For the last few days I've been using Bragg's apple cider vinegar and am noticing improvement. Anyway..... I've learned that lots of things can cause paw licking; from stress to something being lodged in the paw. Is there hair loss, discoloration or swelling? Does it seem painful? I wish I could offer some advice, I know it's awful to watch and not know what to do. I'll tag some members who hopefully have advice and insight.

Thank you for your replies. Actually it is discolored I believe due to it being Wet from him licking it. The Vet has seen it previously
and did nothing about it, so I assume it just is not that big of a deal, but I catch Maximus licking it frequently and I have to yell at
him to stop. I will inspect it today and take a PIC so you can all see it. Thanks again.

When my pups lick their paws like that, they are usually red and inflamed. In Walter's case it's usually an interdigital cyst is coming, or it can be yeast. A food change or different kibble is the culprit. You can try an epsom salt soak to see if that helps... or we also have a thread regarding another foot soak. I'll see if I can find it...

The paw will turn a reddish color from being constantly wet. maybe he needs his food changed. They can develop an allergy to either the protien or something in the food even if they previously had not had problems. You can try to put baby socks on the foot he is licking until you figure it out.

Henry got a yeast infection between his toes once. I only found out because he was licking it non stop and it was red and inflamed. I already had medicated wipes on hand because we once let his tail pocket get infected on accident, so I just used the wipes between his toes for a few days and it cleared up and no more licking. There's obviously something wrong so my advice would be to insist the vet takes it seriously, and if they don't it may be time to switch vets. Look for an English bulldog specialist in your area!

There are quite a few veterinarians in and around the Toms River area. Perhaps you should try another vet. Poor Maximus has alot of problems. I would definitely try soaking it,as recommended, putting a sock on,wrap it with a little duck tape and spray the sock with bitter apple. Take a good look between his toes,to make sure there is nothing there,or stuck in the hair. Food allergy is certainly a possibility.

Lambeau does this constantly too, I have to always say 'leave it' -- his one paw is more reddish/pink from it, but when I check his paw it is fine, nothing there, his food is fine too as I have had allergy testing done. I sometimes think it just does it because he is tired.

I clean his paws with witch hazel or just soak in Epsom salts to keep them clean
