My 1 1/2 year old male EB used to get a thin spot or 2 on his back between his shoulders. Well he's been really sick over the last 2 months.. 2 surgeries and hospitalized for gastric ulcers. The last couple weeks is hair on his back is thinning so bad and is flaky in spots. I give him baths about every month and a half. We use a natural oatmeal anti itch shampoo and conditioner. It's soap free. Does anyone know what it may be? Possibly from the stress of all this? I will post a picture.[ATTACH IMG_2820.JPG

It is probably a staph infection from all the illnesses his immune system is weakened and causes this to happen... he will need antibiotics (string doses) and probiotics to help beat it

Poor thing has been through so much. Yes antibiotics but plz make sure he does get probiotics like Christine mentioned. Just make sure it's the one in the fridge of the health food stores and NOT on the shelves. What is important is the live "strains" not how many billions what counts but again live strains. The more the better. Usually a good one is around 12 strains. Antibiotics kills all in the intestinal area "gut flora" and next thing you know like in humans too you get "yeast" Candida. And you dont want that!

Any idea what antibiotics he would need? He was just on amoxicillin and metronidazole for h. Pylori in his belly for 3 weeks

You would have to ask your vet. Btw, your vet, does she/he know bullies? Like is your vet same one that did the surgery? If so that vet should guide you on right path. If not the same vet, call the one that did the surgery for advice.

I think these helpful, very knowledgeable ladies have you on the right track. My boy had a staph infection that looked very similar between the shoulders that took a while to clear up with antibiotics, but it did work and got everything back to normal. I'm a firm believer in probiotics for my EB (after getting help here just like you) and have been for myself for a while after a little health scare and some research.

I hope Diesel is back to full strength and feeling good soon!

Amoxicillin is not strong enough... ask the vet about staph and you should get 14 days at least of a high dosage. I'll pull out old records and see what Nitschke was on

We use and swear by this pro-biotic. We buy it locally at a specialty pet store, and I've also order it online from amazon. I also can look for the names of the Tyson was on when he had a bad staph breakout & let you know.

There's no strains at all in that one. And not sure but this product is really expensive! I personally prefer the human one as its the same ones for pets. Just says dog n cat on the box. When it comes to probiotics, you have to be careful as it's a hugh market and that's where they get you.

On Amazon:
Herbsmith Microflora Plus Capsule for Pet Digestion, 120 Capsules

Dozer took Cefpodoxime 100mg for 15 days and Pharmaseeb shampoo to get rid of his staph infection (I checked his records), treated it from the inside and out. It was definitely gone after two weeks but still took a bit longer for the skin to heal and hair to grow back 100%. The Vet who saw him was from GA and very familiar with EB's and knew exactly what she wanted to use.
