Boyd is out 4 month old english bully and has these red spots on his head and is losing his hair. He just had eye surgery for cherry eye on both eyes about a month ago. He is currently on an antibotic and eye drops. Not sure what this redness and hair loss is? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. IMG_1736.jpgIMG_1736.jpgIMG_1736.jpg

Check him for Demodectic mange. It usually starts on the head or feet.
And FWIW, that eye should look much better than that after 4 weeks. Actually, it should look better than that right after surgery. Did they do entropion surgery at the same time, perhaps?

Did you take him to a bully experienced vet or was it your local vet? Poor boy, such a sad face, wish I could help.

I agree the loss of fur is probably mange and is common with puppies that have a weaken immune system...which can happen with the surgery. Try a cold compress on his eye to help with the swelling/

His eye does not look good and would get him to a vet for a check tomorrow

please keep us posted/

And, welcome to EBN

No, we took him to a local vet. We did however get a name of a specialist and he will be checked next week. He does have mange. They did test his skin for that and it was positive. The local vet will not be treating Boyd any longer.

They gave us neomycin & sulfates & dexamethasone opthalmic suspension drops for his eyes. We are giving him probotics, salmon oil and a good supplement, daily now. How long does mange stick around? Any other suggestions for home remendies for the dryness and itchiness?

Thank you and yes he has mange. We are treating with antibotic, eye drops, probotics, fish oil, a good supplement. Also, we were given a number to a specialist for his eye. I am hoping that he is on the right path. This is our first ever bully and this has been quite challenging. Do you have any other suggestions as for treating the mange or making him more comfortable? We appreciate it very much.

Hello there. Not sure if you know as you haven't mentioned it anywhere nor anyone is if you have other pets or children, your dog has to be isolated from all. Wash all beddings etc. Probiotics are great but the one you buy in the fridge at your health food stores NOT on the shelf life ones. Read the attachment might help you see things you've missed.... what's sad in mange, there is no known preventions. Things to read below.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil ~ Soothes rough, dry skin. ...Clove Essential Oil ~ Alleviates pain, kills microscopic parasites, anti-microbial.Lavender Essential Oil ~ Soothing, healing, calming, antiseptic. But here is a site that sells already done for you. But go by your vet first!!!

Clove should be in everyone's cabinet. My 2 cents

Poor Boyd. You have come to the right place for advice and we will help you as much as we can. The first thing is to get him to a specialist for his eyes as soon as you possibly can. Has the swelling in his eyes gone down at all? Where in the US are you? Have you checked this site for recommended Bulldog vets? It really is vitally important to have someone who knows what they are doing with these dogs, as you have found out. I don't know much about mange but at the least I would try some coconut oil on him, it will not hurt and will maybe give him some relief. Hopefully someone who has more experience with it will be along to help you there.
Believe me, we all know how challenging bulldogs can be, we have all been there in one way or another!
Please keep in touch and let us know how he is doing (and you!).

Edited to add, just saw that Helene has given good advice to you.

Daily dose of Ivermectin for demodectic mange. Treatment will take as much as 6-8 weeks or until Vet gets a clean scraping. Then a recheck in 2-4 weeks. Eyes need attention right away.
