Hi everyone, I have another thread started from awhile ago from when this all started but I started a new one in hopes to get more responses/advice/personal experience. Long story short, our boy had surgery and during it he regurgitated and got some acid in his esophagus - this caused esophagitis. The vet was unaware this happened until we brought him home and he wouldn't stop regurgitating multiple times a day. We brought him back and they gave us meds and said if he wasn't better in 2 days to bring him back. He didn't get better so we brought him back, they did a barium swallow - all looked pretty good, but he was still regurgitating so they decided to keep him. No food for 48 hours, iv therapy, and they will slowly introduce food back after 72 hours.. if he does not tolerate this, then we have to go to the specialist (where he originally had this surgery) that is two hours away for a scope to see if he has an esophageal structure... in hoping and praying he doesn't because they said the prognosis of that is not good, he's only 1 1/2 😣 Please does anyone have any experience or advice???

I'm hoping that Diesel's digestive system simply needs rest. His esophagus may very well be experiencing "stricture"(narrowing of the esophagus) from vomiting so much. NO food at this point is a good thing...he's not going to starve.
Hopefully he hasn't aspirated and has pneumonia. He's young, and apparently healthy when the surgery was done, so that give's him a better chance for a quick recovery.
Get well soon, Diesel!!!

The vet said the barium swallow didn't show any sign of a stricture so we are holding on to that hope. They called twice to update us today, so far no regurgitation with them!!!!! I hope this means things are going in our favour. I miss him so much

[h=5]There are certain preventative measures that can be taken
to reduce episodes of esophagitis and these include:[/h]
  • Feed your pet high quality commercial food or an all-natural diet that contains all the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients
  • Avoid feeding your pet high-fat foods, instead follow a low-fat, low-protein diet
  • Avoid feeding your pet late at night as late night feedings contributes to pressure in the stomach causing the reflux
  • Make sure that your pet does not ingest any caustic substances or foreign objects
  • Try feeding your pet smaller meals several times throughout the day to relieve episodes of esophagitis
  • Give your pet some honey to alleviate esophagitis and protect the esophagus
I am praying for Deisel, that he will improve and be home soon.
