I'm sorry to be replying a little late on this. It sounds like a post-surgery depression to me but like everyone has said, a thorough vet evaluation of George will hopefully determine what is causing this behavior. I don't recall Finn having such symptoms after his tail amputation so it just sounds rather unusual. Will be thinking of him and you and hoping that whatever it is will be treatable and George will be his old self soon again.

Thank you I check for any replies when I can and all are welcome I am leaning towards a slight state of depression being the cause alright. I'm not sure my vet would have much knowledge of this but I will talk it over with him at the checkup.
He happily went walking today as he does every day but once home he goes back in his crate he came out to bark at the vacuum so that's something but only for a few mins then back in. Also today he hasn't made any noises like he's in any pain so that's another step forward.

Hi again George is 11 days over his tail amputation he is in general healing very well but he is still very out of sorts. He is rarely coming out of his crate except to eat and go toilet and a walk. He sometimes runs away form his food and goes back into his crate but comes straight back out to finish eating (that's strange behaviour for him). He is still doing the same sort of barking and sitting on his butt like he did before when he had infection. But it's the self imposed isolation he is doing that is worrying me most. He's off all medication now too. Is it possible he is numb back there? Or any ideas what the problem could be?

Is it possible that George is having phantom pain? It's common in humans to feel pain after an amputation, as if the extremity were still there. Prayers and warm thoughts for a speedy recovery for sweet George.

Awesome.... may be this is the beginning of him going back to normal

Yep he's back to biting me again now when he is tired and not getting his way just like normal so he has hopefully turned a corner I was getting seriously worried there for an while.
I've booked him in for some new training classes, as I was let down last time by a trainer, but hopefully these classes will help with his socialisation and I can sort out his biting issue.

So George was back for his second check up. The vet is delighted with his progress and the wound has healed up very well. He removed the small bits of scab that were left and I think that has helped George as regards how he's feeling as he has been a little more sociable since we got home. I did mention that the dog seemed to be feeling down and he was concerned and he did blood tests for animea and some other probable causes but they came back perfect. So I'm thinking it was the scabs on the wound that were annoying him and he must have thought they were something stuck on him or something.
So it onwards and upwards for him now I hope and we are starting some training classes next week so that should help with his socialisation and maybe his small bit of aggression then we will have Mr. Perfect 😜 Either way we love him.

Thanks again to everyone for all your thoughts and prayers they seem to be working as George is very nearly back to normal spending a lot more time out of his crate when we are home now. He still defaults to his crate (which he never did) when he feels a bit off but that is probably a good thing and he seems to have learned that when he needs time out that's where he gets it and I've been hoping he would do that all along so maybe every cloud has a silver lining image.jpeg
