A Modified Spay Procedure Preserving Female Dog Ovaries

Had Nyala spayed the traditional way. Now I wonder if it's was tbe right way. This article makes you think twice. Like a women, if you can you don't have all removed so why not dogs or cats?

Thank you, Helene, for a great question and a great link about this issue.

Spay/Neuter is controversial and the dilemma, if done...what' best age?

As for worrying if your decision to spay Nyala, please don't guilt yourself.

All any of us can do (about ANY thing) is make our best decision at the
time with the available facts & situations going on. WE (you) do the best
    we can...it's enough!

Since I've dealt with endometriosis, as has my Mom & both sisters, Mom &
younger sister having hysterectomies & middle sister had a ectopic pregnancy
(grows in tubes instead of uterus) that was dx'ed just before rupturing...I've
researched these things a lot. We all had very long & difficult menopause and
I finally had to have an ablation to stop bleeding & anemia, etc. All this to say,
hormonal issues are similar if not the same in females, human or animal.

I'm of the opinion that male dogs should be left intact if possible and if they must
be neutered, done AFTER that Breed's usual maturity *Small breeds 1 yr old, Medium
breeds, 2 yrs old, Large breeds 3-4 yrs old & Giant breeds, 4 yrs or older. Based on my
love of large dogs and have had plenty & different breeds. The one thing is, you MUST
be a very responsible owner & on top of things, I never had any unwanted litters, from
my Males or my Females. I am totally against S/N of babies, we would not sterilize young
girls or boys because they need their hormones for normal growing, why would this be
different in dogs? Having had many large breed dogs, I became alarmed at how much
cancer kills them & young! My friends with large breeds were all losing their dogs to
    cancer ;(

Cats seem not to have these issues tho and reach sexual maturity much earlier than dogs.
I believe that 4-5 months IS acceptable & right for them, males or females.

It's for each person to research & do due diligence then based on that & personal beliefs, do
what WE believe is best for our beloved pets & our families situations.

Then support each other, not disrespect or tear one another down over differences of opinions.

Of course, we rarely see that here, at EBN...we're family, may have differences but lovingly done.

Yes good point TC... ive always had big breeds too. Nyala is my first little one and my first female. I find Vets don't really inform you on options. Like going to the doctor. We didn't have computers back then so you rely on what your doctor/vet says. Today is easier to find out things. I recall many yrs ago I went to my doctor for headaches. I never get headache. But this was ongoing for 2 weeks. Went to see him trusting him and " here's some pills" headache were worse. I Google the pills and they were depression pills???? I am and never was depressed. Im the "let's go type" never home always on the go, always laughing and all. After a week without realizing what I was taking I stopped asap and headache wasn't as bad as when I was on them. I confronted him with my printouts of his pills and he said : "people should stop reading everything on the net" pfffft, that was it for me and that pill pusher pill doctor. Ended up being sinus. Anyway, all this to say, yes need to do your homework and ask questions. Like I say this often this is a good site hands down. I never planned on Nyala having litters. Way too many dogs out there with no homes. Nothing wrong with spaying/neutered but we have different options too. And yes depends on the owners what the want.

If the experts don't know, how are we supposed to know best options?

And yes, it's appalling that MODERN medicine is no more (many times)
than pill pushing & hoping it helps your problem. This is no slam against
the doctors or nurses but the establishment itself who's sold them & us,
their patients, out to the insurance co's & big pharma...such a disaster
    and worse is to come!

I've been thru the system the last 30 years with various & mysterious
symptoms and antidepressants & anti-anxiety were given to me too.
Singly then in combinations, I resisted at first, I was not depressed and
knew, it was not mental in nature. They get you tho by telling you, they
will reduce your PHYSICAL symptoms and pain so it's 'off label' usage.
A few did reduce my pain but at a greater cost than was worth it & these
pills had horrific withdrawals, something no one ever warned about. Had
to research & wean off them by myself, a nightmare!

It turned out, I had autoimmune disease (several) which sadly, I also had
to steer them into doing the correct tests to dx them. After years of being
ignored, ridiculed & disrespected for years. Then, of course, fought with the
govt to give me, MY money (disability) which they kept 30% of (for life) as a
penalty as I dared take it before 66 yrs of age...like I had a choice!

    Sorry for the rant.

It's ok I know it's frustrating trying to get what is rightfully yours and times you have to be aggressive to get results. Sad isnt it....

I thank god my family are all heathly on both sides and dies in their late 90's. It's rare our days. Why I make sure I give crap to both my sons to continue the legacy. Lol...

I feel you on this one! I had Regina spayed today and I kept wondering if it was the right thing or if I should have waited longer or a million other things.
