porkchop, abbey, gucci and rocky,
i think you should take him to a different vet.. I say this because i had a similar issue.. but first about the anesthesia tube , my vet did a light sedation with my rocky and she would not take the tube out until she knew he could breath well on his own.. she knows about the breathing issues that bulldogs have and knew if she took it out to early it could effect his breathing..
and now the leg... my porkchop was only five months old when she jumped off a step not more the 1 1/2 ft high and she also started limping.. i took her in to vet(not my current vet) they said she broke it in the joint.. they wanted to amputate her leg.. of course i said no way.. took her out of town 2 1/2 hours a way to a specialist check her out and they said it was a delicate surgery but its what they do.. yes it cost me over 2000.00 dollars but it had to be done.. porkchop is now 8 1/2 years old and just in past 6-8 months has started limping a little on it .. vet told me she has arthritis in it now but they said back then that she probably would... i'm telling you this because i think if your vet took his tube out to early and should have knew his breathing could do that i kinda feel maybe hes not seeing something else.. sorry if i sound disrespectful about vets, i am really not a mean person, i just have had some bad experiences with a couple and so i am always thinking second opinion wouldn't hurt.. hope all goes ok..

You don't sound disrespectful at all. The funny thing is this vet is the bulldog whisperer. The rescues here all use him because he specializes in bullies for over 30 years. He's actually the only one I trusted to put him under. My fear of anesthesia is the only reason chum isn't neutered and I obsess over it..I would hope with his experience he'd know not to take the tube out early...but who knows. Now with his prostate issue I'm even more afraid to neuter him after this experience

i know what you mean.. i hate having any of mine put under.. its one of the reason's i had rocky neutered at the same time we had his tail amputation. My husband was concerned it would be to much for him but the vet agreed with me that it would be better then having him put under again... hope all goes well, and i am glad you have a vet that you like.. i finally found one.. around here it isn't easy.. the last one i went to i had a litter of bulldog puppies, and one of them got really sick at 4 weeks old.. i took it to vet and believe it or not the vet looks at me and just says, well, you had 7.:jawdrop:. that is exactly what i looked like...i couldn't believe she said that.. of course it is one of many other reasons i found me a better vet.. good luck with your chumley..

Poor Chum! And poor you! This must have been so frightening. As we have seen with so many dogs here on EBN, they can fail really quickly. I hope he gets his mobility back soon.

@Chumley any update on the boy?
yes he's making slow progress but at least I'm seeing signs of improvement,. He's putting his weight on it again but still a limp. I refilled his anti inflammatories and hope the next few days bring more improvement.
Thanks to everyone for asking...my next issue once this is better is to address the prostate problem. I have to see if neutering an older dog puts them more at risk? I've also heard neutering changes their disposition and personality...he's so good as it is I hooe it doesn't mess with his chemistry. I didn't really get into it with the vet because I was too pre occupied with the leg problem..time to look into that now...but this experience didn't do anything to make me feel better about putting him u see anesthesia. If anything it only heightened my fears..

He'll have to be neutered if his prostate is enlarged - it can end up being life threatening at a certain point if not addressed :(

I'll say that if Chum is in good health he should be fine in surgery. Tyson had surgery at 8 yrs & then again one month shy of 9 yrs old. I had the same fear and my vet now (bully experienced) said that if he's in overall good health, they shouldn't have any issues. They may take a smidge longer to get to moving vs a pup.... But that's about it. I'm happy to hear Chum is starting to put weight on the leg.
Also, Tyson did not change at all after his neuter. No change to disposition or personality.

Thanks for the update... At least he is showing some progress.

As for neutering-- i did not see any change in all of my guys, but they were all done at 8 mths of age. Keep us posted and will be sending lots of positive thoughts to help support you

Chumley I'm glad to hear Chum is making a little progress, continued healing thoughts and prayers from Murray and I. For what it's worth I saw absolutely no personality change in Murray after his neuter and cherry eye surgery, he too was just a pup

Chum is doing much better! The vet called me today and said his age shouldn't matter as far as the neutering but also said his prostate condition is mild..and if there are no issues as far as blood in urine, difficulty peeping or urinary infections it's not really necessary at this point. I am considering It but the anesthesia experience still haunts me..

I'm sorry, i'm just now seeing this about Chum.

I would have freaked out too. A few years ago when i couldn't get Ruthie out of one of her seizures, i booked it to the vet and took some people and cars out on the way.

I'm sending you and Chumley lots of prayers and i hope he gets better!
