Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm still feeling pretty freaked out. Worried and wondering if this is the type of thing that I should look into a specialist for or if it can wait til January when his insurance kicks in and get him neutered at the same time. I wish I could just massage it back in and although I haven't seen the vet yet she told me not to try doing that and I know nothing about it and am worried that something horrible would happen and I'd end up hurting Murray or making it worse. It seems like from what I've read most of you seem to recommend pinning so I will definitely talk to the vet about that tomorrow. my fear is that he'll have surgery and have chronic dry eye or something worse and I want to do whatever I can to avoid that. If anyone knows of a vet or specialist within like 3 hours or so of upstate New York please let me know! Also, I got a better picture of Murray's eye. Thanks everyone! View attachment 93342

Regarding the insurance. Most companies (I know Trupanion doesn't) will not pay for pre-existing conditions. They ask for your vets info. contact them and request your bullies chart. Then they go over it very carefully.
If there are any conditions (such as cherry eye) before the policy started, they will not be covered in the future.

Upstate NY is large. Where are you? I'm in the city and we used Dr. Alexandra van der Woerdt. She's a board certified Ophthalmologist and runs the Ophthalmology department at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan (it's a veterinary hospital).
She tacked both of Blues eyes while he was under for his soft palate. She did a beautiful job and we haven't had any issues since. This was two years ago.

We did have to coordinate the entire procedure with another surgeon there, Dr. Pamela Schwartz who did the palate surgery. She's another wonderful board certified vet who specializes in soft tissue surgery. A year later she also did both of their neuters.

If you're within three hours of the city, I'd recommend the Animal Medical Center. It's a non-profit hospital that's open 24/7 and always has vets on staff. You really can't find better care than the AMC.

They're not cheap though. The eye surgery with anesthesia was over 1k. But mine needed both eyes tacked.

Good luck.

When we had Annie's surgery and considered Rosie's surgery, we were told by specialists that there are two glands in the eye that produce tears, the protruding gland in cherry eye being one of them. So, removal of that gland will cut tear production. It may or may not cause dry eye immediately, but there would be more of a chance of developing dry eye later in your dog's life. Rosie's tear production was on the low end when the doc measured it and that is why we elected not to have the surgery. Personally, I would not have the gland completely removed. There is a method wherein the gland is shaved or partially removed to make it smaller before it is tacked into the pocket. I believe the specialist that did Annie's surgery enlarged the pocket before she stitched the gland in. I'm certainly no expert--just putting out my two cent's worth.

If your insurance will pay for it in January, I would certainly wait. Cherry eye is only a cosmetic problem and there is absolutely no harm in waiting.

We also tried massaging the gland back in, but it always popped back out. I may have put this in my other post that I tagged you to read, but our vet was a specialist referred to us by our regular vet. She had a lot of experience, had trained under the top cherry eye surgeon and then made her own improvements to his method and had never had a recurrence happen in her practice. We were lucky to find here here in town. I would think NY would have a specialist and maybe your vet could refer you to one? CCandMurray

Also, keep in mind that the surgery can be done on both eyes, even if the other eye is not affected. Annie only had one cherry eye, but the vet did the surgery on both eyes to avoid another surgery should the gland in the other eye pop out, which was more than likely. This avoided Annie having to go under again and the expense of another surgery. It cost a little more, but not too much, and I'm so glad we did it that way.

Just picked up Penny - she did great! My vet recommended tacking as well. Alone the price would be $400/500. I wil be doing it when we neuter him. So for the neuter, stenotic nare and cherry eye, she estimated about $1600. But Penny's surgery was about $130 less than her estimate. It really just looks worse than it really is. Good luck with everything and I hope this helps!

i took my 8 month old bulldog to a vet ophthalmologist today and she will be having surgery to sew down the gland. her vet, a bulldog specialist doesn't do cherry eye surgery on bulldogs. she said they cannot be cut out and its going to cost between $1300 and $1500. thirty years ago my cocker spaniel had cherry eye and it was a couple of hundred dollars, but they cut them out back then. my vet said don't cut it out it can mess up the tear duct.

hope your dog does okay.

Goob was about 8 months old when he was playing with his little puppy friends and I saw this bulge in the corner of his eye. I FREAKED!. I was ready to go to the Emergency Vet, called my husband, and asked him to get home right away. He reminded me about the cherry eye issues (THAT I HAD RESEARCHED) and to try and massage it in. I told him I couldn't do it. I was too scared to try. Thankfully he encouraged me to at least try and so...I did. I slowly massaged and pressed downward on his eyelid and it went away. It has happened a handful of times in the last 4 years and each time, I massage it in and life goes on.

I would encourage you to try. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If it massages in and pops out again, maybe it will be long enough to wait for his insurance to kick in again. Good luck...you never know if you never try.

****Sorry, got to this thread a little late...hope everything went well at the vet
