Greetings All,

I hope someone can help as I'm going out of my mind here!!! My 5 yr old EBD Harley has been acting strangely and I don't know what's wrong!!!

She is eating and drinking fine and is perfect going to bathroom

Symptoms:

She is VERY lethargic, She collapsed twice on her own but did not pass out. All she wants is to sleep all day. she sleeps on the bed with us and my wife noticed a little bit of blood on the blanket where her mouh rests.

We took her to the vet:

She has a fever and her heart rate is between 120-150 bpm, it should be around 80 bpm

Chest/ body xray perfect, Ultrasound of abdomen and heart perfect. Blood work perfect. The vet checked her mouth and everything ok there, gums ok etc.

The vet doesn't know whats wrong and has ruled out all major things. The vet doesn't want to treat the fever as it is her body's way of fighting off whatever bug she has.

now she is breathing heavy and drooling!!!! I took a video but it is mp4 and is not compatible here.

I am now in panic mode!!! Has anyone had any experience with these symptoms? Am I being over reactive? Is she just sick? Should I should let what ever is bothering her take its course and she will be fine?

I have searched through the forums but I have not seen any threads etc related to Harley's condition.

Thanks..

David

Hi David,

Sorry to hear about Harley. I don't have any experience with these exact symptoms, but they sound like she definitely has something going on. You mentioned they did blood - did they run a full panel? If it were me, I'd be seeking a different opinion, because something has to be going on - those symptoms do not sound normal. In fact, they are all signs of something wrong. Tyson has shown lethargy, drooling, vomiting when he had eaten socks. But the collapsing. That's really scary. Do you have another vet you could consult? I hope you find answers.

I would take her into a different vet right away. Bulldogs collapsing and panting is not normal at all.

All scary signs, I agree w/Dolphin

The vet is stumped!! A full panel.was run with the blood and everything is OK. I will probably take her to another vet but I've been asking breeders and other EBD owners for their input as well and everyone is stumped. I agreed.with my vet not to treat the fever as the vet would've given her a shot for something unknown which could've made hung worse. I am waiting for a.call back from my vet as I have asked her to.confer with other vets. Other than the labored breathing (twice) and collapsing (twice), Harley acts normal other than being lathargic. Which is understandable with not feeling well. I will keep.you updated. I am hoping it is just a.flu of some sort and it has to run its course. Thank you all.for your info..

I'm sorry you're going through this! Listen to your instincts and keep posted…you're in Canada? Is the weather unusually warm right now? Only asking because I'm in Massachusetts and it's been close to weather record-breaking highs this week…not thinking it's heat related, but do you have any weird plants in your yard that could have sprung up unexpectedly?
Keeping you in my thoughts!! xo

How terrible and I'm praying over y'all and that the reason is found asap!
Please update us when you know...is there a possibility of obstruction?
As you say, like toddlers not yet talking, it's hard on us as they can't tell
us what's wrong or where it hurts. My thoughts with y'all, big hugs!

Outside of the blood this all sounds like my Nitschke on the day he past.... he was perfectly fine the night before, woke up ate breakfast and then threw it up about 30 mins later. I got a vet appointment that day and when I got back home 2 hrs later (went to work till i got a time on appt).... he was collapsed against the wall on the landing , tongue was out and he was breathing very rapid/heavily, Got to the vet and he was fine.... walked in like nothing was going on with him. he had a slight temp, but based on all i told our vet he wanted to keep him for observation for the day. His heart sounded and look normal, all bloodwork (full panel) was normal --- at 2:00 I got a call that he started doing all I described and his heart rate was at 300. They transferred him to an ER where we met them, and our boy past 10 mins after us seeing him of cardiac arrest.

if i were you, I would be at the ER or where ever the cardiologist is

sending prayers

Update- I have appointments with an Internal Specialist and Cardiologist for Tuesday. Her Breathing is normal. She only breathed heavy a couple of times but it was really scary.. She has not collapsed again either.. She has a lot more bounce in her step today but I am closely monitoring her. I've got the ER on standby just in case. My vet is good but I am also looking for a vet that specializes in bulldogs near the Toronto area as well.

Thank you all for your info and prayers!!!! I REALLY appreciate it!!!!
