Kind of graphic pics. Weird paw pad disorder.

So my guy Taco has always had terrible paw pads. He works himself to hard, and loves chasing balls outside. I posted this up before, and it's graphic, but it's realistic, and I need to figure out what it is.

I'm in Fairfax, VA, and I'm also looking for good recomendations for vets in the NOVA region that know bulldogs!

My vet has always been good, but he said this is hyperkeratosis.

I think it can be a cutaneous horn, or hyperkeratosis, but I was reading about something (I found it online, and cant remember where) that makes me believe that this can be treated. It said if there was glass, sand, rocks, or something trapped in there, this forms on the top, and Taco hurt himself at the dog park right when this weird thing started happening.

I'm not a vet, so I obviously am not an expert, and my wife thinks this is genetics, but the facts don't make sense. There are rocks on the side of our dog park that get kicked into the middle of the astro turf. Taco hurt his paw last winter. This growth started coming out of the exact same paw he hurt. We have been trimming it down, but it's to the point now that if we touch it, it hurts him. As of this morning, he's walking with a limp on harder surfaces, and is licking his paw non stop.

What I would like is for this to be cut out, I think they will find a rock underneath, and if they don't, I would like it to be sampled by a dermatologist. Has anybody seen or dealt with anything like this before?

I recall seeing something about this. If I remember correctly, I thought it was a nail. I do believe it can be treated.

Yep. I think it can as well, but I want to make SURE before I consider knocking him out to get it done, I'm sure we are looking at $$$

OUCH! poor baby.... I would be looking for a dermatologist too.... maybe Epsom salt soak to soften it up and trim it down more?

Lisa recently wrote this article about it:

The Pet Help Forum: A Pet Owner's Help & Support Community - Dry Dog Nose or Paw Pads - About Hyperkeratosis in Dogs

Thanks for the link, my wife doesn't want to let me keep cutting it, I think it will be helpful, but it's gotten very sensitive to the touch now, either that or he's being a baby, but he's got a fairly high pain threshold, so I don't think thats it.

Yeah, it's not that far away. I'm hoping somebody local has some recomendations. Like I said, my vet is good, and he offered to remove it, but said it would be tricky because he'd obviously have to knock Taco out, and I think like humans, that can be dangerous with some?

I also would like somebody to side with my theory, or tell me that I'm an idiot, I don't see how this could happen without lodging something in there, but everybody I talk to thinks that it's unrelated.

My goodness, that looks extremely painful… thing is IF you have it cut out would it come back?!! I would definitely take him to a specialist…

That's where my wife and I disagree. I think its formed by getting something embedded into his paw. She thinks it's genetic. The vet also thinks it's genetic.

Ah, I did a little research, and I've well documented this with pictures along the way, from inception to now!

Limping?
What is this?!

Here is the link that led me to believe it is a Keratoma. It reads:

Keratoma, corn or callus growth is a column of compacted keratin in the shape of a nail. The main cause of this condition is chronic pressure or friction. Paw pad keratomas typically occur in racing or retired greyhounds. Inorganic foreign items, such as sand or glass, are a possible cause as well as a papillomavirus infection.

Now I need to find a vet that is knowledgable on this sort of thing who will listen to me and not charge me a fortune, although I'd pay it for Taco.

Nope. I'm on hold with the recommended vet above, seeing if they will do it (they've not heard about it) the surgical staff is helpful, getting pricing and seeing what kind of recommendations they would need to perform the removal.

Have to start with a consultation at $105 and go from there. Makes me wonder about pet health insurance before we go down this road?

I think you are on the right track- this does not look like hyperkeritosis to me.

Most insurance will not cover pre-exisiting conditions and with most, if you do not get the insurance as a puppy, like the day you bring them home, it may not be worth it.
