Help Needed! Swelling on bottom L paw pad

She has seen a dermatologist specialist re: her condition where they've done a culture test, biopsy, & blood test. Their diagnosis was the cocci bacteria with a slight low thyroid. She was not given any thyroid meds during her diagnosis since it was borderline.
Now, the new vet prescribed her a months supply of Cefpodoxime 100mg every 24hr, & thyrotabs .3mg every 12 hrs for 6 weeks. A blood test will be done after 6 weeks, but she needs to stay on constant antibiotics to help with the infection & inflammation. The vet didn't want to poke, scrape or take another sample due to the severity of the infection especially the inflammation.
For now, keep it dry & clean until the meds take effect. Tytysmom - her foot does smell with yeast between the crevice of her paws. I'll be using the Epsom salt dip on her foot to help dry it out & relieve the smell.
Thanks for everyone's support & help today. It's just so frustrating since there's no diagnosis that can pin point what's causing her foot to flare. EBmommy, I feel your pain. It is possible that she has a methicillin-resistant staph which is why you're not seeing improvement. I have a few suggestions that could help! First I would get her probiotics stat. She's on so many medications that she really needs them and I can't express the importance. Not only do probiotics replace the necessary good bacteria that is being eradicated by the antibiotics, but that same bacteria contained in the probiotics will begin to create a healthy intestinal flora which will help heal her overall and make it impossible for the infection to survive. If you take into consideration that 75% of the immune system is in the gut it makes sense that skin disorders are a result of an unhealthy gut/unhealthy bacterias. But when the gut is ruled by healthy staph/fungus/yeast killing bacteria like lactobacillus plantarum the skins issues will cease. I suggest Dr. Ohhira's probiotics. They are excellent!

An excerpt from one article: Supplemental probiotics may also keep the bacterial pH level more hospitable to good guys than bad guys; crowd out the bad guys by occupying more real estate and out-competing them for food; and help repopulate the gut with favorable species to replace those killed by the medication.

Not sure why more vets don't prescribe probiotics - there's a million scientific studies showing how effective they are.

Bully's have weaker immune systems due to many different reasons but you CAN fix that and it's not something you need to just accept.

I'd also suggest a skin supplement such as Canine Dermal Support by Standard Process. This will help boost her immune system as well to fight off infection.

To dry out her wound, I'd pull out the big guns: Anasapt Antiseptic Gel.

And if she's not on some kind of pain killer, I would definitely ask for it so she's comfortable while she heals.

Poor girl! I so hope they find the cause and get her healed up soon.
