Default My baby has Cherry eye!

SO Rufio has cherry eye in both eyes right now and the vet said they can't do the surgery until he is 6 months old. He is only 4 1/2 months now so he has to wait and where a cone. Has anyone else heard of this 6 month rule? it doesn't seem right for him to have to wait so long everyday his eyes get stuck shut from all the goo oozying from them. I have been cleaning them at least twice a day. Is there anything else I should be doing?

    thanks everyone!

Oh no poor baby! I've never dealt with cherry eye so I don't have any advice but I am sure someone else will be able to help.

The only time I had a dog with cherry eye, it was a St. Bernard puppy (about 25 years ago), and her surgery was done as soon as it came up. No waiting til a certain age. I think she was probably about the same age your boy is now. I think I'd be getting an opinion from another vet.

They say 6 months to make sure their dome growing, I might even wait longer. Who did you take him to, your reg. vet or an eye specialist? I know most specialist like them to be a year or older to make their done growing or in some cases they can out grow it. Mack had one that would run and pop out when he was a pup and they gave me an ointment to put and told me to bring him back after he was 1. His would bulge but not all the time and I could get it to go back in and after he was 1 he seemed to out grow the it. Plus I think most won't give you any kind of guarantee till after their older too. Good luck

Chester had cherry eye when we got him (5&1/2 mo. old). We treated it with ointment and at first we could ease it back but it just kept getting worse. We had both Mack and Chester neutered and Chester's cherry eye fixed the next week. Cherry eye looks a lot worse than it is!

Oh so sorry to hear, I have not personally dealt with cherry eye, but I have read several threads on people that do.

Sorry to hear about your poor bully's eyes. Bella had cherry eye in one eye and my vet told me it would have to be fixed when she got fixed. I went home and researched all about it and came across a youtube video that shows you how to gently massage it back down it to place....I tried it and it only took 2 seconds...very easy, and she hasn't had it since.

I had actually always heard to wait a year if possible on any eye surgeries. Poor thing. Cherry eye does not hurt them, it is kinda like having a large growth on your face, not too pretty but it does not hurt.

What do you feed your baby? I the meantime, I would consider trying a new food. Gooey eyes is usually a sign of allergies, which can also trigger cherry eye as well. A good place to start is by building up the immune system with a good food choice, which can really help with food and seasonal allergy symptoms.

I haven't had any experience of cherry eye (although I shouldn't say that as it is one of the few things we haven't experienced with Maggie so far!!! )

However, as you've already seen there are a lot of people on here who have had bullys with cherry eye and so I'm sure you will get plenty of wonderful advice!!

So sorry to hear about double cherry eye...we went through that with Lulu. As for age, she was 5 months old. My vet specializes in eye surgery so all went well. Lulu is going to be 6 and all is well. Did you check with a teaching hospital in your area about how to proceed until surgery?? Good luck.
