Carolyn, he could be scooting for other reasons, like anal glands. When you go back to the vet, have them check them. They may just need to be expressed. Very common in bulldogs and scooting is one of the signs.

The surgery really should be the last resort. You may be able to control it with just a maintenance cleaning once or twice a week.
Also, the prices vary. I've learned that I'll probably pay twice as much in NYC, than someone in Kansas will.

Thanks! I did think it was that initially when I took him in last week but the vet that was on (a new one to me at this practice said they did that but they weren't too bad and it was mostly the tail pocket that infected that caused the scooting. I'm taking him on Friday to who will now be his regular vet who is a good friend of mine since childhood I haven't taken Murray to her sooner because she's just coming back from maternity leave. I really appreciate the advice and do not want to have to consider surgery unless it's absolutely necessary I guess I just want to prepare myself for the worst case scenario.

well my vet in my hometown would not do the surgery.. we started to take him to a specialist the we use when we had other emergency issues but before we did i mentioned it to my breeder(another reason i love her) they breed bulldogs for show and health and the two sisters are also vet techs.. so with that being said and them being in business for over 20 years i knew that this was something they would know about.. so after talking to them , which they did not like tail amputation unless it is last resort, they suggested me bringing him to the vet office that they use.. i was a little worried at first but knew that they have never let me down and knowing this office deals with bulldogs ALOT i took him and it was in a very small town in the country.. So glad i did,, not just him getting the great care he got but price was only 175 dollars.. Yeah, shocked me too since i call the specialist before taking him and it was going to be 1500 depending on severity and it was very bad.. the vet that did it had to put tubes in it to drain and he told me he only does that on the bad ones.. so while the price was right and he was already under anesthesia i when ahead an had him fixed.. vet thought it was the best time to do it so he wouldnt have to be put under again.. when i picked him up they looked at me and said now here is the bad part and gave me the bill.. i laughed and said i was very happy with that bill..

We haven't had surgery but we clean Tyson's tail pocket every single day with Witch Hazel wipes. I'll apply gold bond or destin as needed.

You say you have witch hazel wipes??? :D
Or are they pads??
What kind do you use? Where would I buy them.
I know I know so many questions ;)
My husband says I take Murphy to the salon every night haha.
I just want him to be clean and I don't want to end up with an infection of some sort
He already has his cherry eye problems (left him for surgery this morning)

Clean the nose rope
His ears
His belly
All four paws
His tail pocket
And he gets natural dog company products on his paws after that!
I use malacetic wipes
And then I use witch hazel on a tissue or makeup pad, but I would much rather have them in a wipe form :)

I do recommend just keeping them completely clean and all their little folds and his tail pocket dry dry dry!!!
I have had Murphy for about a month now and I swear all I do is read about bullies!!!

I know this is a old thread but I'm hoping people are still reviewing it...the vet wants to remove my dogs bone in his tail and leave the rest. Anyone have this done? the Vet said it won't look much different then it does now

Some did with great results. I personally didn’t do it n clean Nyala’s tail pocket myself with essential oils. She’s nearly 7y/o n doing great. And yes it’s maintenance on regular basis and not for everyone.

Meaning leave the fur/skin in place? I never heard of this
