Maximus has nights where he doesn't sleep all night long, and he sits up panting all night long! It is really a problem, and troublesome to hear/see. I don't know what would make him not sleep, and I don't know what
would cause him to be Panting all night long. The AC is on, so it certainly is not hot/warm in the house. I just
don't know what is causing this ......

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on here ?

First of all, how old is Maximus?!! Older dogs can have sleeping issues. Has he had his yearly visit to the vet?!! It may be a good idea to have a check-up done… panting could mean many things. He could be in pain or having trouble breathing (elongated palette). I think the heat this summer has thrown everyone off their normal sleep schedule.

Panting and not sleeping all night is a sign of discomfort of some sort and in my opinion a trip to the vet is needed. If you have painkillers for dogs in the house you could give him one to see if it helps, but even then you need to find out what is the cause.

Yep, I have made an appt. to bring him in to see his Vet this week. It isn't the heat, because the house has central AC and the temp is set at 73-degrees all night. He does weight 85-lbs which could play a part in this. He is 5 years old, he will be 6 on January 1st. His tongue is nice and pink, so I don't think he is hypoxic. It could be cardiac related and weight related. I need to brain storm with the Vet this week.
Thanks everyone for your input.

Hopefully the vet and you will know what to do for Maximus. The high weight could definitely be playing a role in this though; like us humans, being overweight causes more stress on our vital organs, such as the heart, causing them to work even harder. Could the reason why he is sleeping so much during the day be b/c he cannot sleep well at night?

I agree with the gang ---- weight and/or discomfort(pain) could be it, but with his age you could be on to something with it be cardiac related.

PLEASE keep us posted after you see the vet.

UPDATE::

Maximus saw the Vet last Friday. He had labwork drawn. His weight is 81-lbs. He lost 6-lbs. His overall health is good per the Vet.
His heart and lungs appear good. No respiratory problems. The Veterinarian called me this morning to let me know the Labwork
all came back Normal. However, she feels he needs to lose more weight.
She said to speak to the Vet Dermatologist about a Prescription Diet, or speak to the Nutritionist there (Garden State Veterinary Specialists). He does have severe Dry Eye, and is now on Cyclosporin Opthalmic drops 2-3x per day.
I don't know of any "Prescription Diets" other than Hill's Science Diet, and Maximus will not eat that food.
So, I don't know how to get Maximus to lose more weight.
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas ?

Thanks.

Happy the boy is healthy --- I gave a couple suggestions on a different thread, but another I can think of is something I may have suggested before.... cut the kibble in half and add a veggie (green beans, broccoli, carrots) -- see if that helps at all

Great news. Maximus is a smart boy not eating that food....2BullyMama 's suggesting sounds good. Raw feeding is also good for loosing weight, since it doesn't have too many unnecessary carbs in it.

Yeah, Maximus was on a "Raw" diet for awhile. It was pre-packaged, Natural Instinct Raw, but he did like it ---- it just became way to
expensive for me to handle !

YES, this is great advice!! I did that for my boys and Tate ended up losing a few pounds b/c of it. I would put 1/2 cup kibble with a bunch of either frozen or canned green beans. The canned was nice b/c i could use the water to bulk up the food.

Glad to hear that Maximus got a clean bill of health from the vet.

Yes, checking in on Maximus also. Hoping his weight is causing
discomfort (& feeling too hot). My girl is on a diet right now, I'm
using her grain free kibble, usual amount cut in half & added green
beans each feeding. Cami is extremely sedentary so weight loss is
slow, no treats unless it's 1/2 cup warmed green beans! Good luck!

UPDATE:: Maximus has gained more weight, and is now up to 88-lbs. He had to see an Opthamologist on Friday at the recommendation of his current Vet. The diagnosis is Entropion in both eyes, Dry Eye in both eyes, and Chronic Keratoconjunctivitis
in both Eyes. He is now on NeoPolyDex ointment in the (L) eye 2x daily, in addition to Cyclosporine 2% drops in both eyes 3x daily
and Genteal Ointment in both eyes 3x daily. He has corneal inflammation, corneal edema, fibrosis and vascularization. He is on a
Weight Management Dry Food (FROMM). He refuses to eat any raw vegetables (green beans, carrots, etc.). He is also seeing
a Dermatologist, and has severe Hyperkeratosis on his nose, and all four pawpads. The back paws are worse then the front paws.
I have to use Bag Balm and Bio Balm on the pawpads in addition to Kerasal ointment. Snout Soother is used on his nose.
He is at this stage total maintenance daily. I will be making another appt. to see his regular Vet this week to check his Tail Pocket -
I want to insure there is not a problem. I cleaned the tail pocket today with Witch Hazel, and got a small amount of blood on the wipe. It could have been from my finger irritating the area while cleaning.

Please keep Maximus in your thoughts and prayers as right now he is not in good health.
