Looking for an affordable Vet

Hello all,

I am a new bulldog owner. I have a beautiful, gentle, little bulldog named Stella. She is a wonderful addition to our home and family. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a fair and affordable Vet in York region? We have one now who is incredibly expensive and we feel like she may be taking us for a ride. Poor Stella has just developed cherry eye now, and we've been given an incredible quote for the operation to correct this. We're not a rich family, and we understood the health risks with some bulldogs, but we really wanted Stella. Can anyone that has any experience with cherry eye recommend any vet in our area (or outside of it) that would have reasonable affordable rates for this procedure? We're being told it's going to cost $1000 which is very difficult for us right now. I wish we would have gotten the pet insurance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How old is Stella? If she's a puppy and just developed Cherry eye, I would massage it back in for a few months to see if the other one comes out as it's very common.

One of mine got it at 4 months, then he got it in his second eye a few months later. That's when we had both tacked.

Regarding price- I think it depends on where you are, and on who does it. The quote you received doesn't sound bad to me, but I'm in NYC and the prices are going to be higher than in other parts of the country.

Thank you. Stella is 7 months old. Im also concerned about her other eye as well as ive heard that both eyes can be affected in the same way. Thank you for tagging the others on this as maybe they can steer me towards a vet here.

Hello rubymummy. I have gone on youtube and tried this but each time i massage it, it works it self back out. The latest time now it is protruding and really large and red. This time it will not go back into place, even temporarily. Im afraid that the vet option is the only way to go at this point.

I don't think $1000 is a bad price, I lived in Toronto for 7 years, 4 with Lola our bully, and vet care is expensive in ontario (and NYC and Boston, i digress). The VEC on lawrence/yonge area is excellent but expensive, more expensive than the original quote. You do not want to go to a vet on the cheap with bulldogs, they are very sensitive to anesthesia and I would stick with the experts. Our normal vet was Matthew Richardson at the Animal Clinic on mutual street downtown. Lots of street parking available and there is a pay parking lot across the street. They can do some surgeries there, I would call him up and ask, they are very nice and profession and the place is airconditioned. In the end, Lola needed both a tooth extraction and a palate surgery so we went with the VEC for both so Lola would be under anesthesia only once.

fyi we paid about $4000 for the two surgeries but had pet insurance cover about half

Brett had a cherry eye on his left one and was $150 to remove it. The right one hasn't really pop out and when it does I can easily massage it back. So far so
Good.

Tacking is going to cost more than removing it.
But $150, even to remove it sounds very low. Did they not charge you for anesthesia?

One of my bullies, Annie, had cherry eye surgery when she was about 4 months old. We took her to a specialist, who does a lot of cherry eye surgeries. The surgery was the one where the pocket is enlarged a little, the gland is tucked back in and it's stitched. This doctor did the surgery on both eyes, even though only one needed it at the time. That's her standard procedure because it's so very common for the other eye to be affected and it eliminates the need for another surgery. We paid about $800., and Annie never had a recurrence. (It may have been less for just one eye--probably was--I don't remember.) That was probably 6 or 7 years ago and I thought it was pretty reasonable at the time.

I'm sure the vet told you that cherry eye is not harmful to your dog and you could wait until you have the money, there's no hurry. It looks bad, but usually doesn't bother your dog at all. So, the surgery is done for cosmetic reasons only. I had another bully that had cherry eye in one eye and we never had surgery on it, because she was older and the eye doctor I saw at the time was concerned about dry eye. I did wish I had done it when she was younger, because people meeting her would always say, "Ewwww, what's wrong with her eye!?"

The type of surgery Annie had wasn't available when Rosie had her cherry eye. Rosie's doc would have trimmed the gland, which would have reduced the amount of tears and possibly cause dry eye and Rosie didn't have a lot of tears to spare. Good luck!
