Does anyone know if once a bulldog has an pneumonia, is it going to cause other problems or make him more susceptible to another one? I am so heart broken I have only had him for 9 days and already have had him in and out of the vet and now he has to go back to the kennel where I got him for 2 weeks in hopes he will be better. I am praying I can have him back:heart:

Hi and welcome to EBN. Sorry to hear about your new bully. I don't have first hand experience, but I'm thinking that having pneumonia at an early age doesn't necessarily mean that he'll develop it again later. Their immune systems are not as strong and still developing, and along with the cold weather, they can catch anything easily. Hopefully you can have him back once he's better as well, I don't see why they wouldn't. You've showed your attentiveness by seeking care when you realized that something wasn't right. To me, that's one of the signs of good parenting.

Please give hugs and kisses to your little one from all of us. We'll keep both of you in our thoughts and prayers!

Just a question. what did you mean by Kennel. If he came from a true Kennel this could be how he contracted it. I don't know what your def is but you may want to think about wether this is best for him or not. If the "kennel" is not someones living room. I would not be sending him back.

Why would you have to return him? I hope he gets better. dozersmama is right, its probably how he got it in the first place and there is no reason you can't take care of this in your own home. Please keep us updated.

I do not believe that being sick as a puppy means anything about the future health of the pup. For example, our puppy Tidus aspirated some milk when he was drinking from his mother. He developed a severe lung and chest infection and the vet gave him 6 hours to live. He survived, and he is a 'bouncing baby boy', with some minor problems like eye boogers and allergy to chicken. But other than that I have no issues with him.

My husband also got pneumonia when he was a young baby. But he is healthy and fine too ;)

I do hope it all works out for him, please keep us posted. I understand everyone's concerns with the use of the word 'kennel', but hopefully they are not really a 'kennel' type, but a good breeder who will bring your pup back to health. I pray for this.

Hi All,
Thank you for all your answers :) We bought him at a Kennel. They said they were breeders but really they send away for their bulldogs. After seeing all the bad horror reviews we are devastated that he is sick and back to the same place. When we found out he had pneumonia we brought him to the ER and they told us it would be over 3k a night so our other option was to bring him back and they would take care of him for 2 weeks. I have sent many complaints to the better business bureau and they contacted me. They are sending out a vet to make sure our puppy as well as other are being taken for properly. We were just concerned that we couldnt provide him with the right care as the ER Dr. told us most bulldogs with an pneumonia do not make it due to their bad respiratory systems already. We are concerned when we get him back he will have other major problems. I wish for him to get better so he can return home. Any suggestions would be great!

Oh boy. I wish you would find a GOOD Bulldog vet and take him there. The 24 hour ERs tend to soak you for as much money as they can get out of you. But I sure don't like the idea of him going back to where he got sick to begin with. Call English Bulldog Clubs or rescues in your area, and they should be able to direct you to a vet that knows Bulldogs. I would certainly trust a Bully vet and my own care before trusting this kennel, it doesn't sound good. I'm sorry you are going thru this, but I'm glad you found this site. Ask whatever questions you have, you will ALWAYS get lots of good advice here.

Wow and $3000 a night?!?! That surely doesnt make sense to me. I dont know of any vet that would charge something like that. If it were me I would go and get that puppy back where you can take care of him rather than them but then I do understand money may be a concern. If possible take him back and get to a bully vet asap. Especially if this vet said he probably wont make it due to respiratory issues, no bully vet would say that I doubt. I hope he gets better and fast, poor thing. :(

I have researched two bulldog vets in my area that I plan to call tomorrow when they open. My boyfriend is concerned that we are going to get him back and have multiple problems with him and financially not be able to afford him. We are not happy bc the place claimed to be a breeder but they ship away for their bulldogs so we won't know down the road if he will have problems. I want to bring him home and take care of him. He needs a good home no matter what.

Yes he does need a good home nomatter what. I would call this place and just tell them you want to take the pup to another vet to be looked at. You bought this puppy so they should have no reason to not let you do this right? See what the bully vet says about him and his health with pneumonia and have him checked out overall to know what else may be wrong if anything. I suspect you will realize that it wont run you as much to help him as you think, assuming the pneumonia isnt a horrible case or something crazy. This pup would definately be in better hands with you than this so called "breeder".

Pneumonia is a scary thing...but its very treatable. Vegas developed aspiration pneumonia during a seizure. We took him to the ER and they NEVER once said anything about him not pulling thru. His ER visit for the day and night, plus all the x-rays and meds was 800.00. They are the most expensive clinic in the county. I'd be researching a little more. Something sounds wrong.

I'd definitely get my bully back from this "kennel" as soon as possible. Then I'd look at getting a second opinion from a good bully vet - there are lists on this website from the home page and also from www.thebca.org - you just need to scroll down to the veterinarian list. I would have thought that given the age of your pup and the fact that you appear to have caught it early that there is no reason why there shouldn't be a full recovery.

Why are you taking him back? Winston had pnemonia at 13 wks, it is very common in brachisophalic dogs. They just gave him antibiotics to take for 21 days and he way fine. he is 7 months now and is in great health. He'll be fine.

I called all the reputable vets in my area and faxed his records and xrays to a bulldog specialist who should be getting back to be soon. My boyfriend called the kennel today to see if we could go see him and they said no he needs to be in containment from getting more sick, so I understand that. We only gave him back to get better because our ER DR told us he may not make it and scared this S*** out of us thinking we couldnt give him at home help. Now that we know we could have we can't wait for him to get back. Its now their liability to take care of him until he is well enough to come home, there is nothing we can do now but wait. I will have a vet ready to bring him to as soon as he is released :) Its amazing how many people there are out there to help, and who are involved in the bulldog breed. I completely disinfected everything in our household he touched with vinegar. I read that too strong of chemicals are not good for them to inhale... I hope I read right! I will keep you all posted, and thank you!

Let us know what the specialist says when you hear back. Good to see that you have now found good vets in your area. With bullies that is SO important. I hope your pup comes home soon.
