The density of socks is so light they really won't show on an xray, a barium X-Ray is the only way to know for sure, or exploratory surgery. When my girl had that donut thing in her it was so light, lighter than a sponge, which is why it didn't show up in her X-ray. But it was there for quite some time, as it had adhered to the wall of her intestine. Doc said any day it could have ruptured and caused her to become septic, she could have died! But I went with my gut that she had an obstruction, and told them to do exploratory surgery to find it. They thought I was nuts, as she was a wiggles and happy to see them when we arrived. I told them, I swear she IS dying, I know it, don't let her fool you!!!

My point is obstruction of material that is not dense is very commonly not caught by any vet, and I consider mine to be top notch. But the extra to have someone else look at the X-Ray is BS! I do agree there. But it boils down to us knowing our pets and knowing they are just not right..... We are the key to life and death situations. I just wish more vets did barium X-rays when the symptoms present obstruction. ESPECIALLY in bulldogs! I just don't think vets realize the size of objects our furkids can swallow!!!

Harlea goes for my black no show socks as well. She sucks them up like spaghetti noodles. Lucky for us she pukes them up 2 days to 2 weeks later. Glad your boy got rid of them on his own. BTW.. Which ER vet did you go to so I know to avoid them should I even need and ER Vet and Brittmoore isn't open.

He went to Brittmore for his first X-ray (which they said showed nothing) the next rounds of X-rays & ultrasounds were at NHVS - North Houston Vet Specialists. I'm torn with them, because their internal specialist Dr. Jill Manion is amazing - she's the doc we owe Tyson's life too when he went into respitory attack coming out of anesthesia. The others basically told us to come say goodbye to him...She took a totally reverse approach then what the other docs had initially suggested & I feel that's what saved him. She went to Mississippi so she did a lot of her schooling with bulldogs. Our issue with them is the night (after hours) staff... Which sucks bc that's who you get in ER situations. Dr. Manion only works M-F 8-5, and took total control over him when that happened. He was in an oxygen tank for a week, and no one was allowed to do anything to him without her consent. Her techs are also amazing, however you won't get them on off hours/weekends. Brittmore is his primary... Funny thing is vet had us cut his diet in half, bc she said he was overweight... It was shortly after this that Tyson started eatings things. He's never in his 8 yrs of life been a dog to eat things. Never, not even toys he could care less about them. So this experience has all been new to us. We've been feeding him more bc honestly I'd rather he be fuller & not eat things that can kill him! He's always been a big boy, he's active, goes on 2 good distance walks a day. Just hoping this is it! And he can get to feeling better. Which doc at brittmore do you see Marine91 ?

We only see Dikeman, Kampschmidt or Barron. Dr. Dikeman and Dr. Kampschmidt are great bully vets but set in their ways for the most part, but we love Dr. Barron as she is young, new and open to outside ideas and off the wall possibilities. She was a tremendous help for us when Harlea had MRSA.

Good to know, we've seen Dr. Chellappan, and Dr. Burbridge. Maybe next time I'll request Dr.Dikeman.

I'm torn about what to do next... Keep on watching him obviously... But should we request a barium swallow.? I guess I'll see how he is over the next day, and follow up with Vet on Monday. I'm praying that's all he ate.

Very good point, bullmama - I did see something on the X-ray but it was faint, but I saw it, however you couldn't tell at all what it was.

@bullmama thanks for the info. but what about a sonogram, it won't show up there either?

I guess after my own experience, I now think when a dog lacks all symptoms, blood work comes back normal, and the only thing is vomiting, a red bulb should go over a vets head and their
brains should automatically go to obstruction. They should offer every test available that can detect it. But that's just me, and it comes from being a member here for two years and seeing so many cases of it, then having it happen to Blue.
@TyTysmom you shouldn't cut his food in half because as you found out, they will go foraging for food..lol..
Replacing even a quarter of it with green beans will do the trick. He'll feel full and still lose weight.

Yeah I know what you mean! I think that is just it, we see it as a common thing here, because it is just something we know our bulldogs are easily capable of. We know the signs and symptoms. We know our breed, we see it all the time here.

My girl was presenting with other different symptoms too, high white blood cell count, non stop sneezing.... so they were doing all these different tests thinking disease or loss of organ function. Ended up the High cell count was because the donut thing was causing an infection due to it eating away at her intestine, and the sneezing was especially strange because once it was out of her the sneezing stopped completely. I suspect she was also allergic to the item. Lucky she didn't die!

She also was constipated but her x-ray showed a complete line of stool moving through which is another reason they did not think I was right about the obstruction.

I personally think our breed does not follow the "rules" when it comes to presenting symptoms. The first vet we saw was my mobile vet, when she was starting to act strange. First, all of her coat turned very fuzzy, like a soft teddy bear. Like super soft fleece, it was weird!!! She also seemed to have lost hair on her sides (presenting like Seasonal Flank Alopecia), but it just didn't look right. It just didn't feel right to me, the skin wasn't dark and just didn't look exactly like the photos. It didn't seem to bother her at all. Don't get me wrong, the coat was sooooooooper soft! But weird. Her vomit was projectile, and my mobile vet said if she was obstructed it would not come out projectile, therefore he said she definitely did not have one. It was about a month I am guessing when her coat changed to when we did the surgery to remove the obstruction. She was vomiting dark green puke that smelled of :poo: for about 2 weeks. They tested for so many things, but nothing came back positive. Once it was removed, she lost tons of hair, her coat was thinned, but after a few weeks it came back in normally. How is that for super weird!!?

In the end, my vet charged me only half price for the surgery. He truly felt awful, and somewhat confused by the whole thing..... but really, with all the tests and xrays, we actually did pay full price and then some.....!

As far as the sonogram, I am not sure. I would certainly think it would show up on that.

Asking for some prayers. Tyson even after throwing up both socks still has not bounced back like we would have liked. He's still been off, so we dropped him off this morning for some additional testing, we requested a barium swallow. I haven't heard back from the doc yet on what they are going to do first. But still a nervous wreck, and I hate that we can't be there with them. We are very close by, work wise. Hard to concentrate on anything else at this point.

Prayers coming your way, I hope that he's going to be ok. I'm glad you took him in, especially since you feel he's still not right. I was hoping he was better :(. Dang it! Let us know how his testing goes, and I pray he's just still not feeling right and there's nothing else wrong. :grouphug:

bullmama 2BullyMama - Just got a call from doc. She does not want to do the barium yet, she stated once the barium is done, she loses the ability to scope him. Which is much safer than surgery. She re-did xrays & ultrasound and found that his stomach is full of gas, and his intestines are very inflamed. Also, they aren't contracting the way they should, which she thinks is all the result of the socks being in there, and possible bacteria. She also said he could possibly have a small case of pancreatitis due to it. Her first course will be to get him fluids, bc hes slightly dehydrated, she's also giving him meds via IV to get the inflammation down in his stomach. She said she's having a hard time seeing the stomach due to the gas, so she's going to recheck him in a few hours after the meds have time to work. Can't thank you guys enough for the prayers :pray2:Will keep you posted as I hear more.
