I keep hearing unscented baby wipes. I realllly hate baby wipes. They're gross. They always leave this slimy weird, wet film on my hands. I dont think they are what would be best for folds that need to be extremely dry. Maybe I've used the wrong baby wipes but the after-slime bugs me. There's got to be something that has these elements:

* Antibacterial
* Anti fungal
* Anti yeast (maybe all 3 is asking too much in one product)

and most important: extremely light, thin liquid that dries (aka - alcohol content).

Is there such a thing? I have the duoxo pads, and I also have "Malacetic wet wipes". But both have very strong smells, and I don't understand why. Especially the Malacetic wet wipes. The orange odor is intense. If its intense for me, imagine Baxter having to deal with that after I wipe the fold above his nose.

I know humans like "pretty smelling things" but my goal is to clean and disinfect. Not make baxter miserable :)

Oh then theres this:

"ā€œBe careful with using baby wipes to clean dogs feet etc. Many have propelyne glycol. Even the ones that say natural, scent free and alcohol free. Propelyne glycol is very toxic. We used baby wipes to clean our dogs feet a few years ago. The dog licked his feet. Eventually he got sick and died. This Derma Pet is safe and worth the money.ā€

Hi Kevin thank you so much for sharing the information on the toxicity of some baby wipes, this is great information, as many of us Including me use unscented sensitive baby wipes. We never think of these being toxic or dangerous because they are made and marketed for our most vulnerable little ones, a baby, so we think they are safe and harmless to use.
Im so sorry for what happened to your dog from using the wipes on his paws. I wonder what this does to our children's skin? Although they don't lick it off the product does sit on their skin and so is absorbed by the skin. It really makes you wonder? Im not sure which brand of baby wipes you use, but the baby wipes that I use don't leave a slimy after feel, so I'm not sure if they have the same ingredients. I also don't use the baby wipes everyday, I do use them about once a week to clean their eyes, the outer parts of their ears, and the face. I do bath my guys every other week, and when they are in the tub, I use a face cloth with tearless puppy shampoo, I use the Petsmart brand, and I soap up the cloth, wash their eye area, faces, ears, folds, and then rinse the cloth and rinse and wipe the areas with the cloth. I use witch hazel on a cotton ball or Q-tip to dry out the nose ropes, but this is only done twice a month after their baths. Have you ever tried using witch hazel? I'm wondering if there are any natural or home made cleaners for the face, I do use a home made cleaner for their ears when they need it. I use equal parts of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide and a drop or to of rubbing alcohol, buy a plastic bottle with a nozzle from the dollar store and mix the liquids and place in bottle.

English bulldog Wrinkle Cleaning Technique

Why clean face folds, tear stains, nose folds, tail pocket on your English bulldog:

Part of your English bulldogs unique love is the flat nose and wrinkled face. These adorable characteristics make the English bulldog breed one of the most popular. Unfortunately these cute wrinkles can get moisture in them. And when they do, there is nothing yeast likes better than a dark warm moist place to grow and multiply like crazy.

If left untreated, the yeast will spread and start to itch and cause your dog to scratch or rub her face across the rug. Left untreated, these minor infections can lead to bigger, systemic infections. And what is worse, these yeast infected areas really stink, which can really inhibit your cuddle time!

Many people think English bulldogs are naturally stinky animals. They are not! All they need is you to take a few moments to clean their faces. How often? weekly or monthly or whenever necessary (you will know by the smell). Note: when you bathe your English bulldog, take care not to get water into the folds and unwittingly cause this yeast problem.

Supplies Needed for Cleaning your English bulldog:

ā€¢ Cotton balls

ā€¢ Cotton swabs e.g. Q-tips

ā€¢ Sterile Eye Wash available at pet or drug stores e.g. Optopixs

ā€¢ Corn starch, available at grocery stores

ā€¢ Anti-fungal cream for extreme cases e.g. Monostat available at drug or grocery

stores

Restraining your English bulldog

To effectively clean your bulldogĆs wrinkles, you need to keep the dog from running away. I used to chase my dog all over the house until I came up with this simple and easy technique:

1. coax you bulldog over with a tasty treat

2. turn the dog around so her tail end is facing you

3. squat down and put one of your knees on the ground, the other remaining up

4. pull the English bulldog is butt back in-between your knees, snugly, so she can it back up and

get away from you.

5. hold your English bulldog by the chest to keep her from running forward, this can be done

with one hand, leaving the other free to clean

Cleaning Technique:

I have tried many wrinkle cleaning techniques (including Baby Wipes, Stridex Medicated Pads, never peroxide) and have found this to be the best, and hereĆs why. Alcohol or peroxide are very strong chemicals that can further irritate the dogĆs skin, drying it out and actually damaging cells. This can create worse problems. Sterile Eye Wash is a great product because you can accidentally get it your dogĆs eyes without harming them. This is not the case with peroxide or any alcohol based product which can severely irritate the eye. Another word of caution. Baby powder, Gold Bond powder, and other talcum powders contain known carcinogens and have actually been shown to further irritate skin. Corn

starch is non toxic and an excellent absorption material. I know you are thinking you want to dry out the area to reduce moisture and stop the

spread of yeast, fungus, and bacteria. But if you use harsh chemicals you may cause open sores and infection. And you most definitely will cause your bulldog a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering.

So here is the cleaning process for your English bulldog:

1. saturate a cotton pad very wet with sterile eye wash

2. place it in the nose fold or wrinkle or tear stain area or tail pocket for the nose

fold, place one hand around your bulldogs snout and pull up above the nose with

your thumb to expose the deep folded area (this is also a good way to check the

nose fold to see when to clean)

3. let it sit for a while to loosens up in the dark crusty crud that may have built up

4. rub the cotton ball in the fold area, with the fur, against the fur, sideways and pick

up all kinds of crud

5. repeat with new cotton ball if needed until cotton ball appears clean

6. take a new dry cotton ball or soft piece of cloth and wipe out excess moisture

7. take a Q-tip and dip it into the Corn Starch, getting a good amount on the end of

the cotton swab

8. carefully place the corn starch into the nose fold, wrinkle or tear stain area being

careful not to get the corn starch into the eye

9. repeat corn starch if needed until the area appears powdery and moisture free

When to Use Anti-Fungal Cream for your English bulldog:

If your English bulldog is nose fold or tail pocket does not respond to this cleaning, you may need to use an anti-fungal cream. Simply take a small amount and rub it into the infected area and it should clear up in a few days. For example, using Monistat 3, the infection should clear in 3 days; Monistat 7 would be a week.

Secret Weapon against Tear Stains

Tear stains are unsightly, but they are not harmful to your bulldog unless they get infected. Runny eyes can be a sign of entropion, a condition in which the eyelids curl, causing the eyelashes to irritate your bulldogā€™s eyes (see the book for more information on eye problems). You most likely will have to take your bully to an eye specialist to have these irritating eyelashes removed. Tear stains are no more than just deposits from the mineral saturated water that comes from your dogs eyes. These naturally occurring minerals stain the hair a coppery color. I have found a really great product that prevents tear stains. It takes several weeks to start working, but is quite effective. Itā€™s called Nu pro Gold Supplement and is available at pet stores. It is an organic supplement that provides vitamins, minerals, and digestive enzymes that may be missing from your dogā€™s diet.

I never, ever use plain baby wipes. They will only add to yeast colonies.

I prefer a warm washcloth. If I do use wipes they are squirted with one of the below:

Douxo pads, malacetic otic, malacetic otic ultra, ect.

But if you are not having a stain problem or irritation, witch hazel is my preference.

I like using witch hazel. After it dries, I will sometimes apply some Gold Bond medicated powder in the folds carefully using a q-tip.

When I give Frank a bath, I use a washcloth to clean his face folds with a natural doggie facial scrub.

I too think this every time I wide Dooley's face with this stuff.
I follow it up with a dry cloth after is sits for a minute or two. Poor guy runs around snorting and wiping his nose on the floor.

@4WHLN LOL! I think its time we relieve our pups. Maybe the witch hazel suggestion? Someone else suggested the good old standard PetSmart doggy wipes. A wet wash cloth seems just as good if you're really good at keeping on top of it. But let a few days go by and water won't be sufficient (at least not with bax). Once the smell sets in, you're dealing with bacteria or yeast. Even if its just beginning-stage.

PS: I am not sure if the PPG is toxic. Just quoting that one website I saw. So please check my assumptions before you run for the hills! I didnt get to research it yet. Turns out the Malacetic wet wipes have PPG after all. So, aside from the disgusting peach/tangerine/barf smell, maybe I have another reason to stop using them. They have great reviews on AMazon, but I honestly think those are people who love weird smells just because they're not the smell of actual poop. I am a person who prefers the smell of "cleanness" (aka - no smell at all). That is what makes me feel like something has been disinfected. I don't pour on the cologne and I use unscented deodorant as well. Greatest invention in the last 10 years as far as I'm concerned :-D Absence of bad smell, not abundance of good smells = clean to me. :)

Yes poor guys are suffering at the hands of us evil skin humans all in the name of cleanliness. LOL

I have witch hazel that I use when there is no smell just as a preventative when Im on top of things. But the issue is when I forget to clean for a several days/week (I know Im a horrible parent) I use the stinky stuff since its an anti fungal wipe.
So can I use the witch hazel all the time?

I've been wiping Blue's paws every day since it's allergy season and grass and trees are making him itch.
Douxo wipes and Malacetic shouldn't be used every day unless there's a very bad yeast infection. Otherwise, it becomes irritating to their skin.

I love the idea of cleaning with witch hazel but I can't use it each time we come in since it's too drying for Blue. So I use "Earthbath Grooming Wipes", the "Hypo-Allergenic" ones. I only use it on his paws, and areas that have touched grass.
I love them. He's itching a lot less now, the wipes don't have any smell, and they don't dry out his paws/skin.

I wash ours when I bathe him, and just use a paper towel and Neo-Predif poweder (get some if you can from your vet) in the folds if they are getting icky, which is rare anymore.

Best thing is keep dry. My vet is very anti creams/wipes, etc to use in there. He says if you keep them dry you won't have issues.

We use HexaChlor-K wipes (requires prescription) which dries and clears any yest infection almost immediately.
About once every 2-3 weeks is all that is necessary to clean facial folds and avoid any yeast infections.
Groomer every 6 weeks to get him bathed, nails clipped/buffed, anal glands emptied, ears cleaned, teeth brushed.
TOTW Buffalo and Venison kibble from PetFoodExpress also helps keep his coat brilliant white.

I use the original gold listerine with cotton pads and then dry with paper towel. I do face and chin folds every morning after she eats breakfast. Just watch the eyes ;)
