He should have taken x-rays. Our Boris ended up with pneumonia from aspirating on some dog food.

Pneumonia needs to be ruled out. Only way is through xrays. Get him in ASAP. You don't want they liquid building in his lungs due to an URI

I am glad yo are taking him to another vet and hopefully this vet is a bully specialist as most vets are not that good with bulldogs. Let us know what the new vet said.

He woke up in terrible condition today. He was very lethargic and didn't eat anything. He went from just coughing and acting fine yesterday to that this morning. My husband has him at the vet as we speak. They are doing an X-ray so I am at home with my two little ones patiently (unpatiently) wanting on the results. I've been texting him every few minutes but he hasn't answered me lately. I will update more as soon as I know something definite. Thanks so much for everyone's advice and concern. I'll let you all know something soon.

Well after another vet (a new vet) visit and an X-ray, we still don't know anything definitive. The vet said it could be a bad upper respiratory condition or it could be something congenital. They gave him some stronger antibiotics and some steroids. My husband says he is now throwing up while they are on the way home. I'm about to my wits end because this vet is taking a wait and see approach with the possible congenital issues. Ugh, this is just so frustrating.

Ugh, I'm so sorry. Hopefully after a little rest and a little food and with the meds he will feel better. I'm happy this vet took the chest x-ray and at least he wasn't diagnosed with pneumonia. I'll be praying for him, thank you for letting us know.

There could be another reason why your bully sounds congested that is worth getting a vet to have a look elongated soft palate and everted laryngeal saccules x

Could the "congestion sound" actually be a slight rattle due to an elongated soft palette? When duchess was 8 weeks she got an upper respiratory infection and had green nasal discharge. I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics . She was very lethargic and I thought she sounded congested- this was a week into the antibiotics so I rushed her to the er- she was fine and the "congestion" was me being a new bully owner and actually was normal for her and she was just fine took about a week after she finished antibiotics to be her normal self- as far as not eating try adding yogurt or cottage cheese to her food to get her interested. If you tell the vet she's not eating they usually try to give them something new to see if in fact they aren't eating. If the dog eats it they usually say they are just fine and not feeling well just like a human.

I'm so sorry I've just got back on the thread to check the new comments. Here's the new long and short of the story...he of course went to the new vet and had X-rays. It showed lots of congestion and they couldn't see his heart. They sent us home with a strong antibiotic and steroids. After the two weeks of meds we took him back to the vet and they did another X-ray. It had greatly improved from the first X-ray but to me he still sounds congested and then started coughing up phlegm and spit. So I called them back and they have said he could possibly have a heart abnormality and possibly wanted to send us for an echocardiogram. I personally do not feel this is the issue. His cough is congested and bubbly sounding when he coughs. They finally did diagnosis him with pneumonia and from everything I read, his cough is indicative of that. He isn't coughing near as much now but I still hear the rattle when he breathes. They did give me another round of antibiotics which he is on now and will be for a total of three weeks. I am really beginning to wonder if it's what you all have suggested as far as the soft palette. If that's the case, does he need surgery for that or can he live a normal life with it? He's eating like a horse and playing normally. He's not lethargic at all and acts like he feels fine. It's just the "congestion" rattle that I'm concerned about now.
