    Default Could use some advice!

    Hey guys

I was wondering if anyone has some experience with this or some advice.

We have had Bacon since the middle of September and we got him when he was about 9 weeks old. We got him from a breeder who seemed to know a lot about the breed and also care about the breed. Since we have been having issues she has avoided me, which is very frustrating, specially when we spent so much on him, and we really thought we were getting him from a good breeder.

Since then we have had him we have had a handful of issues. Our first issue was allergies, which we got managed with switching his food. Then we ran into the biggest problem have have faced which is Cherry eye. Bacon got it in his left eye first. He was rough housing when it happened. The cherry eye then got infected, so we had to wait to do surgery til the infection cleared up. We had to put ointment in his eye multiple times a day for a week. After the week we took him in to see if the infection cleared up, and it did so they proceeded to do the surgery. Long story short we continued to have problems for several weeks including lots of discharge and then an ulcer, and we were to the point of having to take Bacon to the vet every week for over a month. Then the stitch ripped and the cherry eye popped out again. The vet insisted we do the surgery again, and this time stitch his eye almost completely shut for a week. That surgery has worked so far.

Now his right eye has popped out and we have decided to wait to do the surgery because we had such issues with the first one. This eye popped out for absolutely no reason, no rough housing, no real activity, it just popped out. We luckily haven't had serious issues with this eye, but i am also aware of what to look for this time around.

Recently I have noticed Bacon limping a lot and walking funny. He isnt overly active, so i know he didn't hurt himself. We are very careful with him and how we pick him up and put him down, so i know we did not cause any problems. The most troubling thing to me is that his hips literally pop in and out of the socket. He will be up on the couch and stand up from sitting down and his hips pop. When he walks his hips pop. I am worried this is a sign of something more serious. Bacon is only 5 1/2 months old, and he still has a lot of growing left to do.

What would you all recommend? Has anyone encountered an issue with hips like this. If its nothing serious and just part of him growing I dont want to spend the money taking him to the vet for them to tell me it will go away with time, but if it is something that is more serious I am going to try and contact my breeder again and see what she say, and hopefully this time she gives me an answer. I am also going to look over my contract more closely and see what all is covered. Im not trying to cause problems with her, I'm just trying to get and keep Bacon healthy.

Hi @Bacon - I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this situation sounds pretty serious. Please go to this link on hip dysplasia. Someone else had a question on it before and I responded to it and included several other links to my experience with Truman and hip dyplasia. The symptoms you are describing sound pretty serious and probably need to be dealt with so please read that thread and the links in it and let me know if you have any other questions and maybe I can help more.

I have not had any experiences with any of this... I do know that the breeder I got Ireland from has a 1yr health gaurantee. BUT it does not cover cherry eye.. Which I really wouldnt hold them to that because you never know if they will get it or not... I love the breeder I delt with she was awesome. She went over the conctract with me word for word. I wish you luck with Bacon..

I'm so sorry to hear about Bacon and all his hurting. This makes me so sad. @jillh10 and Baby T have gone thru some hip complications, so she will be able to tell you about her story. On another note, I was thinking about Bacon yesterday. I saw this shirt...and just had to take a photo of it for you...

Thank you for all the info!

@jillh10 I was afraid it was hip dysplasia, but i was really hoping for better news, and just hoping was being too worried about it and making it a bigger deal. Im going to do more research on it, look over my contact, look into insurance, and look into vets. Thank you for referring me to that page!

@Pendragon I dont think the breeder is responsible for the cherry eye, and i know that isnt covered on the contract, and its pretty random of what bullies get it or dont get. Bacon is the only one of his litter to get it so far (arent we lucky??! ). Its just a frustrating issue to deal with, especially with all the complications we had with the first one. Right now its not bothering him, so we don't find a need to cause an issue with it, and put him under again for the 3rd time in less then 3 months.

His hips are my main concern, and i just dont want him to be uncomfortable and in pain.

@Libra926 Love the tshirt!! Thanks for taking a pic! I have a magnet with that on it a friend gave me.

Well, I know it isn't the news you wanted but, on the bright side, catching hip problems at a young age before arthritis sets in can be an advantage for treating the condition. Also, there is a significant chance hip dysplasia is mentioned in your contract with the breeder so I would go over that carefully and, again, let me know if you have any questions! Hang in there!

I don't have any advice, glad jill chimed in because unfortunately she knows alot about hip issues. I hope things start getting better for poor bacon!

I agree with jill. I have no personal experience and we all know she surely does. Let us know what the dr says. Maybe rather than taking him to your reg vet and then being referred to a specialist you should just go to the specialist to have him xrayed and looked at, at least saves you something. I hope it isnt too serious.

Thats unfortunate about the breeder. With our breeder we keep in contact for about the first year and now I have emailed her a few times and havent heard back, she was so great and rescued bullies as well, I am not sure what happend. I hope Bacon gets better soon!

I must say I am a bit discouraged that Bacon has been through so much at his age. Yes, cherry eye can happen to any bulldog, but to have 2 cherry eyes, hip issues, and allergies and he is still so young!! The allergies too, usually do not develop until they are older. Sounds fishy to me, and the breeder BETTER respond to you!!!

So does everyone agree that i should get in contact with a Specialist? If so I will begin my search, and get something set up. Do you recommend I contact my breeder before I take him, or wait to see what the vet says? Thanks guys
