    Default demodectic mange

hey i was looking for help. I had taken my English bulldog to the vet because i notice a small bald spot , they had said it was a hot spot. the condition worsen and took another trip to the vet office . They diagnose him with puppy Pyoderma. i had him on cephalexin 500 mg and was bathing him with Malaseb medicated shampoo. Well now the condition dramatically worsen and now on this last trip they told me he has demodectic mange and now i have him on ivermectin. I was wondering if any one have had similar issues. Is there anything else they use? is there something better then Malaseb? Thank you in advance

I'm sorry Cali (and you) are going through this. I don't have personal experience with mange but I know someone will come along soon with some help/feedback for you. I remember a member @mer55 whose bully also had to be on ivermectin so I'm tagging her here. Hang in there!

I went through demodectic mange with our Boxer when she was 6 months old. We did a round of ivermectin, but I can't remember how long I had to give it to her. This was in 2003. We never had a problem again. My Vet said it might flare up again during times of stress. Gimli (my boxer) went through two surgeries but never had a problem again. She died of cancer in 2012 and I miss her so. We've had Lucy, our EBD, for ten months. I didn't think another dog could steal my heart, but she has! I know the ivermectin (sp?) is so nasty and there are opposing opinions to using it, we never had a problem other than feeling so guilty everytime I gave it to her.

Most of the times that I have known a dog with Mange-ivermectin is the drug of choice. Two dogs that I know of had the sarcoptic, and they get a shot of ivermectin once a moth to keep it from erupting.

I think that a new vet is in order! Ivermectin is where you are at with the mange, but I don't know how the heck it went from a Hot Spot to Pyroderma to Mange, it seems like they are just guessing! Those are three totally different skin issues.

Keep up with the ivermectin and keep in mind depending on the severity of the mange it could be a while before it clears. Sometimes it takes months.

Bogey had Demodex mange at 6 months old. Treatment was ivermectin for 4 weeks then another skin scrape. It still showed some mites, so they treated another 2 weeks and he has been clear since. Mange usually manifests with compramised or underdeveloped immune systems. We started him on probiotics right away and he is much healthier ( he was in and out of the vets for months with bacterial infections, gastroenteritis and then mange. Since his treatment and probiotics, he has had nothing else! Good luck!! Ps: it is NOT contagious to other dogs or animals.
