Re: Surgery preparation! Please help. Iā€™m scared for my little guy.

My 7.5 year old English Bulldog Sarge is going to need an ear canal ablation within the next month. We have been putting it off and trying different alternatives for some time in the hopes of avoiding surgery knowing that he has the breathing/soft palate issues of a bulldog but it would seem that he will inevitably need the operation. I'm less concerned with the ablation itself, as severe as it sounds. My concern is just getting him through the surgery in terms of dealing with the anesthetic, breathing tube and such again because of his breathing. If anyone here has had a bulldog survive surgery with these sorts of breathing issues, I would appreciate any insights that might get my man through this alive. Surgery prep? Anything that any of you might know that I don't. Thanks.

Have you looked into a second opinion or another vet that is in the area? If you don't mind telling us where you are located, we may have a member recommended vet you can get another opinion from.

My girl is 8 yrs old and just had surgery to remove a stone from her belly, she came through awesome, but our vet is VERY knowledgable with Bulldogs and when not comfortable with what needs to be done he sends us to another vet (specialists)

Some really good advice here, I don't have much to offer. Dudley had one surgery - when he was neutered and did fine, but he was a baby. Sending good thoughts, prayers and best wishes for Sarge!

Our bulldog had soft palate surgery when he was neutered along with removing his tonsils and widening his nostrils. Our vet said he had a very large palate. He did very well and breaths normally now. The change was amazing. I was very nervous but our vet does this surgery for the French bulldog rescue in our area so I felt a bit better. You may want to look into it Hope all goes well.
