Hi...does anyone have any experience with the long-term use of Temaril P? Our baby is 8.5 and our choice is between its long-term use or palate surgery. We will be getting a second opinion on the surgery, but I've asked a few bullie owners who have had the surgery done at an older age and they have all recomended against the surgery.

It seems our options aren't great but any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

That is an excellent question, unfortunately I don't have the answer. I do think you are probably right at doing a pallet surgery at this age if the temiril p is working. Sorry I can't help further. :(.

What did your vet say about the long term use of Temaril P? We've used it twice when Blue was four and six months old. My vet wasn't thrilled with using it too often, even though it's a low dosage steroid.

We also had the palate surgery done and it's not a difficult procedure. The issue is the Anesthesia, and your bullies age.

If I were you, I'd find a good animal hospital and make an appointment to speak with someone there.

Our vet feels the same way about the temeril p.

I guess I should start from the beginning. Doughnut started with the hacking symptoms almost a year ago when he was 7.5 and a week of temeril would clear it up for months at a time. Then in August (we're guessing because of the heat and pollen), it became chronic...the temaril would only solve the problem for a week. Because of the phlegm sound, we took xrays of his lungs in August and again a couple of weeks ago and they were crystal clear, which meant that whatever was causing this was in his esophagus area. At that point our vet sent us to the local vet specialist group where they have hi-def xrays and mri's. There we were told that they were almost certain he needs palate and larygeal saccules surgery. They can only be 100% sure with a scope which requires anesthesia, and since he's a bullie the specialists would like to do it all at the same time so we need to give the go ahead for the procedure in afvance. I wasn't crazy about that part, or maybe that it wasn't ournormal vet who specializes in bullies, but I asked 2 people I know that had their bullies have this procedure at 6 years old and both told me that they regretted it and would have opted for the steroids vs. the surgery. They both had the same complication which was that if you do the surgery later in life they struggle to adjust to such an open airway & they aspirate.

Doughnut has had several surgeries throughout his life and has never had an issue with anesthesia, so my concern is more of how bad would it be to keep him on temeril p long term since I'm not inclined to do the surgery unless its our only option and it gives him a considerably better quality of life.

Again, my regular vet is not crazy about any long term drug use and we will be discussing that option tomorrow as well as whether to go to UF or UGA for a second opinion, but I was hoping that someone had some insight as to how bad long term use of this drug is.

The Temaril-P? it's a low dosage steroid. I know in our case, my vet doesn't want us to use it too often.

Gonna tag ChrisRN Her bullie Mabel had it done when she was older. Maybe she can offer you some more insight. But yea, I can totally see why you're hesitant. Had no idea that palate reduction, saccules removal can cause aspiration in older bullies. I'd be hesitant too.

It is a low-dose steroid mixed with a benadryl type drug. We've all been wondering the same thing about this just now becoming a problem, but it seems to be that now is when the palate is irritating to saccules and causing them to inflame and narrow his esophagus. The hi-def xrays and ekg ruled out tumors and an enlarged heart, so until we scope, this is what the specialists believe it to be.

He does have sleep apnea and is not very active now a days. My concern is the heat in the summer since we live in Florida, but we can deal with that by just taking him out in the back yard and skipping the walks.

Benadryl doesn't do much for him long term, unfortunately. Btw, thank you guys for all of your responses and tags...all of this info and suggestions have been great. You'd think by now after 8 years that an active bullie owner would have seen it all, but I guess not!

I would say since he is this old and has gone this long without the surgery and no real problems, I would skip the surgery. The temeril p, if given in a low dose should not be a problem long term. Just watch for side affects and if you see any, contact your vet. Also once he is on it for awhile, you can not stop giving it to him suddenly, he will need to be weened off it slowly.
