Chumley recently has been getting more and more of what appears to be dandruff like white flakes on him...Does that mean his skin is dry and anyone have any ideas what to do or put on it? I already use coconut oil on his food and a skin and coat conditioner Ive used since I got him. He had a bad skin reaction with salmon oil so I don't use that. Also, any suggestions on what you type of comb or brush you use for shedding would be appreciated. The few Ive bought were ineffective. I usually massage his coat outside daily and i remove a lot of shedding that way. I feel he sheds too much for a short haired dog especially at this time of year.

A while back I noticed Maude was getting some dandruff. When I was at the vet, I showed him, and he said salmon oil, or olive oil. I had tried Salmon oil, with my Malanois, and it didn't seem to help. At mealtime, once a day, I put a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil in their food, and no dandruff. The comb Sheena showed has been used for shedding horses for years. They also have one with rubber teeth, that massages while grooming. You can find them at a horse supply, or feed store. They work very well My dogs do not shed a whole lot, as I give them a supplement.

Winston didn't do well on salmon oil either, I switched to coconut oil but we are still in the trial stages… My dogs go to the groomers every 6 weeks to get a good scrub down, I'm allergic to dogs… how ironic, I know!!! LOL Once a week I use the Furminator to get all the under hair off, and then I finish off w/the Kong scrub brush. I haven't noticed flakes on Winston, but my boxer has been flakey here lately… not sure what is going on, the weather just got really cold!!!

My cat has real bad dandruff and has the same symptoms as you described that Chumley has. I use the Furminator brush, it's awesome, gets all their undercoat real nice and good. http://www.furminator.com/. Give Chumley some scratchins from me!

I remember reading somewhere that applying apple cider vinegar onto the coat can help cure dandruff. Also, brushing the coat is important b/c that will help stimulate and distribute the natural oils, and flaxseed oil is supposed to be good for the coat as well.

Thanks everybody I tried the furminator..my son uses it in his pug and it works great in her but when I used it in chum it didn't seem to get any hair. I use a skin and coat conditioner from Health Extension since I've had him with no problems up until now...I'll give the kong zoom groom a try and google the other brush..thanks again!

I can't help you with the dry skin, but I use the Kong Zoom Groom on Mayhem and he loves it, as it massages and brushes at the same time. It collects the hair really well too. Mayhem gets some serious butt wiggles going when he sees it in your hand and will crawl on your lap as he is being brushed with a look of ecstasy on his face. I think he would lay there for hours getting "zoomed" if I would keep doing it :)
