Baxter has Hip Dysplasia and Dislocated Hip.

Took Baxter in to see why he's been coughing so much and in the X Ray, they discovered that not only does he have hip dysplasia, he has a completely dislocated hip joint. I mean its not even remotely close to where it should be. The "socket" isn't formed properly - in a curved shape. They're practically flat, which means dysplasia was going to eventually happen to him anyway, but his left leg is completely out of socket. And has been, for months.

I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on Saturday morning to see what the best course of action is. Baxter runs, plays, and walks completely normal. Size and weight plays the biggest role in how painful his life will be. Fortunately his dad was only 40lbs, and so was his mom. So maybe if he remains little, he will be just fine. But either way he is going to need a FHO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femoral_head_ostectomy) ... an extremely invasive and expensive surgery. Now i know the value of finding a quality breeder.

I have been very ... very sad all day for Baxter and his future of pain. I can't believe his leg is completely out of socket. ...........

So sorry to hear of Baxter's diagnoses. I know by reading your posts, what a good Dad you are, and that you will do the best you can for him. There are websites where you can post things like RIPOFF reports and such- and greedy "breeders" and you should do so. Perhaps it will keep others from buying from that person, and they will eventually go out of biz.! I will be praying for you and your sweet little Baxter. There are so many uncaring people who just want the almighty $. I am so sorry for you little fella' and you.

Oh I'm so sorry that you and Baxter are going through this. Poor guy, it's amazing that he's walking normal with out any limping, when his leg isn't in the socket. How old is Baxter? I'm glad that he is able to walk, run and play normal right now, but it must be a big worry for you regarding him having to have surgery in the future. I would be going back to the vet and at least asking him for some money back to help offset the cost of future surgeries for Baxter. He doesn't seem like he would, or that he has the best interest of his puppies at heart, but it's worth a try. Thank goodness they found it now, and you can get the information needed to help him later, and he's so lucky that he got you for his daddy, who will make sure he gets the best care. Please keep us posted on what the specialist says, and how he's doing.

I am so sorry to hear about Baxter's severe hip dysplasia... :(

Do not fret! My male bully was the same...unfortunately it was a while back and Samson's hip dysplasia was not quite as bad as Baxter's but I suggest going with the hip surgery...it will save him a life of constant pain and arthritis. Since Baxter is so young the surgeon may recommend you wait until he reaches adulthood before doing the surgery. We could not afford to do it at the time and that is my one regret...if there was ANY WAY I could have swung it...I would have done it in a heartbeat...luckily now there are loans available that can help pay for it...is there a teaching veterinary school nearby? I would check into any and all options, including a second opinion.

You may ask if giving him Glucosamine and Chondroitin would be helpful at this early age.

I know that some dogs are just born with it and others are the product of greedy breeders. Baxter is lucky that you are so concerned for him and want him to live the healthiest and happiest life possible.

Oh my god! You don't need any kind of medical training to get the picture. I so hope from the bottom of my heart that they're able to fix his hip somehow and he doesn't have to live in pain.

Kevin, I am heartbroken for you and Baxter. Poor baby. I agree with Lynn about posting info on the breeder so no other bullie families have to go through this. Send prayers and hugs to you both. Keep us posted and good luck with the specialist!

OMG!!! so sorry this is the case for you sweet boy... as you said, hopefully he will stay on the small size like Mom and Dad, weight is a big factor in how they can handle the pain.

My girl has very bad HP as well, we were told at 8 months that she most likely would need to be 'put down' by age two.... well, she is now 8 yrs old and a second opinion and keeping her weight in check has made the difference.

Baxter boy will be in my prayers. HUGS to you both

Oh no, and to think you had suspicions from even before you brought him home that something was fishy. I am so sorry Baxter Tiberius for hearing this news. :(

Keep him on the slim side, but I would have to say those are some of the worst Xray I have seen.
sheshistory has experience with this too

Wow that X-Ray is awful. I cringed when I saw it. I would contact the breeder on the off chance that he is an idiot and doesn't know about the poor genetics he is passing on, and go from there. I'm so sorry for you and your sweetie. Baxter is just beautiful!

Wow, Im so sorry you and Baxter are going through this. I would definitely start him on some type of glucosamine supplement, it does help. Good luck, and I'm saying lots of prayers for you and Baxter!!
