@TubbysMom It's probably a yeast infection. Blue gets those now and again in his tail pocket.
I just use Mal-a-Ket wipes or Duoxo pads, twice a day. Clean it out real good, make sure all the hair and brown gunk is gone.
It usually takes about 3 days (if i'm cleaning it twice a day) until I no longer see the brown gunk. Then I know the yeast is gone and I can go back to maintenance.

Ok perfect I will definitely go out and buy either or both of those. Can I find these at Petsmart or do I have to order them off the net?

Not sure. The active ingredient that kills the yeast is Chlorhexidene. So you if you to Petsmart, look for products that contain at least 2% Chlorhexidene.
There's also a product called Hibiclens (you can get it at any drugstore) that contains Chlorhexidene. I've never tried it but I know others here have. It works the same way.

Mal-a-ket (amazon takes you to an external link): http://www.amazon.com/Mal-A-Ket-Wip...e=UTF8&qid=1380903091&sr=8-3&keywords=malaket
Duoxo pads: http://www.amazon.com/Douxo-Chlorhexidine-3-Pads-Count/dp/B002LO0MGU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_2

Both work on yeast, just a matter of preference.

hmm.. I've never tried that. What some here do is use gold bond powder in the pocket to keep it dry. But I wouldn't put anything on it until after the infection clears up.
like I said, use either product twice a day until you're no longer seeing the brownish gunk. Then use the wipes once or twice a week. You'll get a feel for how often you need to use it after awhile.

Excellent advice, other products that work are malecetic otic ultra or panalog. Even witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide will help keep it dried up until you can get something stronger.

Stephanie, sorry, just catching up with this post about Tubby's tail pocket. Finn has this problem currently; he's on his 2nd round of antibiotics. It sounds like you are being very proactive with treating him before it gets worse. I on the other hand thought i was doing it right but applying some antibiotic ointment to the area but it only made things worse and he was eventually placed on steroids + oral antibiotics. The advice you got sounds good but if after a few days you notice it not improving or worsening, take Tubby to the vet (not the one you mentioned tho!), b/c he may need something stronger. I hope he gets better soon!

I have used the Hibiclens and it works great as a matter of fact when I give Sheldon a bath I mix a little in with his Shampoo so it gets every where

I use witch hazel on Jenna's tail pocket...then either some desitin cream or gold bond powder...i agree with the above and wouldn't use the desitin or powder until you notice some change/healing....maybe that will get you through until you can see the vet you prefer if necessary

We'll never thought I'd say this but Canada sucks!!! All of the products listed are unavailable here and apparently anything with chlorahmexidine requires a prescription.
I found the bully vet specialist in Toronto so I'm gonna give them a ring and see if they can guide to something. Thank you for your input tubby, me and his tush are very grateful
