Torn Curciate & Lateral Patellar Luxication-Should we get the surgery???

So we just took Chubbs to the surgeon for his consultation and it turns out he has a torn cruciate, similar to human acl, and a lateral patellar luxation, meaning his knee cap won't stay in place. We were quoted at $2,900 for the surgery.

Our question is, should we get the surgery? Chubbs sometimes puts weight on his back leg just fine, and other times has a more noticeable limp. He's still the happy crazy bulldog he's always been.

I want to know if anyone's baby has been diagnosed with the same thing and have choose not to operate...how did it turn out? Do you regret not operating, or had everything seemed fine? We are on the fence right now due to all I've read about the surgery and still having problems down the road afterwards.

How old is he? If left unrepaired it was gradually get worse and cause arthritis later down the road. If it were just a luxating patella I would say maybe hold off , but with the tear being present I think it will cause him alot of pain later in life.

Our 8-1/2 year Yorkie, Shadow has the same conditions. He was limping with the back leg tucked during the summer. Ann took him to see a specialist and the estimate was "at least $3500" with a prognosis of "he will probably need the other one done and he will always be susceptible to arthritis". We got some pain meds from Sharon, our vet. And then confined him in his crate for a week as she prescribed. He has been perfect ever since. No sign of a limp. And he is back to romping with Walley-Bubba, our massive 11 month English Bulldog. Shadow can once again easily out-run, out corner, our accelerate and out brake WB. So WB just sits and watches and waits while the little guy races around the house. Priceless. We have decided to put-off the surgery for Shadow. The tear seems to have healed. It's not a question of money. He just doesn't seem to really need surgery and we are more afraid of the side effects and possible complications and consequences.

Yep, Nitshke had the same exact surgery, no regrets! it is a brutal recovery cause you have to keep them calm, no steps, no walks, no running , jumping NOTHING bit leashed potty breaks for about 4 weeks.

Nitschke tore his and would not place his bag leg down at all... the knee cap still poopped out after the procedure (here and there) but he recovered great. We paid $1,700, but it was 6 years ago

Our english Bully Tubby Torn his right ACL around Feb of this year and we went ahead with the surgery, he is not even two yet, so we had to take that into consideration. And thankfully, we have health insurance for our little man, and they have saved us! We live in So. Cal. and the surgery was $4200.00. But that's not the end of it! So four months later, he was playing and BAM tore the Left ACL! The Vet had told us that this could happen, but we still felt so bad for him. So 4 weeks ago he had the other ACL repaired and is now recovering perfectly. This surgery was $5000.00! We don't regret the decision to get the surgeries done, based on the information provided by the vets and also with how young he is, we thought this would be the best course for him.
