Winston is almost 5 months now and has started to develop tear stains for awhile now. We feed him nothing different than the day we brought him home as a puppy, Fromm pink puppy food.

How can we get rid of this and then keep it from coming back?

Try adding a little apple cider vinegar to his drinking water to help clear it up. We use Pro-Sense Tear Stain Remover Pads on HRH's stains and they work well. I wipe with a pad then dry the wrinkle well with a tissue. Amy hasn't had a problem yet. She's on the same puppy food, and I have noticed some tearing from her eyes, but most of her face is black so even if she develops tear stains it mostly wouldn't show.

Duchess
The eye specialist that just preformed duchess surgery said the only real way to get rid of the stains is to figure out why the eyes are tearing up. I never understood where the rust color came from and she explained that is a reaction from the tear coming in contact with oxygen. Both her and my vet said once you get to the bottom of why the eyes are tearing then peroxide can be used the whiten the fur that is stained. Duchess eyes are soooo much more dry so once the swelling goes down I will start to tackle her staining. She was stain free till about 6 months. Then her eyes became constantly teary and her stains got bad I tried everything I finally have up and sure enough she was tearing due to eyelashes growing the wrong way and irritating her eye. Hope this helps
