Default $1400 cherry operation for ONE eye? New Englanders

Hi there, I have a beautiful little shark toothed pup who's cherry eye popped out last Friday. It's still out and he's on drops. The vet told me I needed to see a specialist, which I did today to the tune of $185 for a visit. I also spoke to another vet before I saw the specialist who told me this doctor, who works at "Eye Care for Animals" is the only doc in RI that does cherry eye op. The cost for cherry eye surgery... $1,400! Can someone, anyone provide insight on this? Am I limited to a specialist? Rhode Island, MA, CT... please help!

I went thru the same thing with my pup who we had paid for the surgery but it wasn't that much for us to have it done in Texas I know that’s a far way but we werent limited to a specialist we were recommended to a vet who did the procedure.. unfortunately my bully didn't seem to heal right and has scared tissue on one of her eyes so from what i heard he didn't do such a very good job at it or we didn't do very well with the healing process.. I’ve had the option to have the scared tissue removed but of course that’s more money out of pocket so I decided that i wouldn't until it started bothering her vision then i would go and have it done (I’ve had my family ask why I have a blind dog) since that’s the way it looks on her.. another thing that makes her unique

Cherry eye should not require a specialist. That price is outrageous... Knock off $1000 and you should be in the ballpark. Read the article on cherry eye too. If one pops the other may follow, and did they try massaging or tucking it back in?

A BIG HOWEVER.... There is more than one procedure so I would shop around. Maybe someone on here can recommend a good vet. The problem with not getting a vet who is really good at this surgery is that the can quite literally do a 'botch job' it is cosmetic surgery. So I would certainly put on your list of questions how many successful ops have they done and what is their preferred technique.

@Akamm10 Hey! I'm right outside of Boston and I go to a vet in Brockton, closer your way if you ever decided to use them! I go to the VCA North Main Street and see Dr.Sefchuck, she's amazing! She owns and used to breed and show bulldogs so she is very knowledgeable of the breed and has many bulldog patients! Although non of mine needed a cherry eye operation, Gio just 2 months ago needed his tail removed and she did fabulous, and the cost was just under a $1,000 which was the lowest possible when they gave us the estimate. Princess is currently in the middle of heartworm treatment (had to go today for her 3rd shot!) and once again Dr.Sefchuck is treating Princess as if she really was a Princess! This treatment is on the lower end of the estimate they gave us as well. I would definitely give them a call and see if they do the treatment, I'm sure they do since it's a popular operation for bullies and most of her cliental are bulldogs! Good luck and keep me posted with everything! PM me if you have any questions or anything!

Winston's popped out once but we were able to massage it back in. I have never heard of it needing a specialist though! I would def. go around and get some diff opinions. Good luck!!

WOW!! for cherry eye that alot you shouldnt need a specialist just a vet that knows about bulldogs.
There are a couple of different procedures you can have done. They can be put under and actually have it taked back in or they can just cut it out. Neither procedure should cost that much money the surgical procedure should be less then 500 and and the other procedure should be under 100 I would think. I have a little brindle girl who has MAJOR heart issues and could not be put under so she had hers cut out and it cost me 50 dollars. Most of the time a cherry eye isnt life threating so you should beable to shop around and find a vet that knows bulldogs and can give your your options without killing your bank account.

My pup is healing from her second surgery right now...she is 11 days post op. she had one eye done and true to every thing I've read the second followed. My vet offered to refer me to a specialist, but we declined. Her first eye did not take so she did something different and it is,looking great. The quote is very expensive.. We live in the greater Cincinnati area and the first time it was just under $400.
