In March 2013 Buster was neutered and at the same time the doctor had noticed that he had broken out with very bad teenage acne and at the same time she noticed a very hard lump like a giant hard pimple about midway down his jaw and I know she had noticed it because I saw her feel it while she was examining him on the ground in the hospital room. I really didn't think much because I saw her hold it for awhile so I knew she had seen it. That one mass never left and I thought it was all ok. She had prescribed a 7 day antibiotic for him which worked perfectly. His acne went away completely but that one hard pimple never did. About 3 weeks ago we had noticed that his acne was coming back and so I thought maybe it was best to switch up foods. Maybe he was allergic to potatoes or something like that. He was on Fromms beef and fritata and I had ordered pork and peas. We stopped all treats, peanut butter, yogurt, strawberries bananas, etc.. After he started the pork and peas we noticed the acne had really started to go away.

This last Thursday the acne came back with a vengeance AND I noticed a second hard pimple just under the surface of the skin AND a new mass that had formed underneath the skin and is very very soft like a wad of very soft chewing gum and moves around when you squeeze it but always returning to the same spot. I came home from work Friday and his chin was all swollen and red and called the vets office and made an appointment for this afternoon. We use Duoxo30 wipes on his entire face including his chin everyday and sometimes put a little desitin on his chin after it drys up. The vet took a sample of the soft mass under his skin with a needle and has sent it off to the lab for prognosis. She did a skin test with some kind of tape that you put on and take off and run under the microscope. She said the acne and swelling is being caused by 80 % bacteria and 20 % yeast infection and has prescribed a 4 week dosage of Cephalexin AND Animax ointment for it. The hard pimple like thing is part of the acne/bacteria infections. This is the best pic we could get of him this evening.

I know it looks like a very bleary version of a certain JAKEISGREAT avatar (which I think is the greatest EVER) but I assure you it is not a Landshark. We have to wait 2 to 3 days for the results to come back from the specialist she sent the sample of the soft chewing gum lump off too. :pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray: Has anyone ever felt anything like that, a soft chewing gum like mass on that soft part of the throat on their baby?

Ooooo Poor Buster. Well..I had a Dobie that was the Queen of lumps. I'm glad she aspirated it and sending it out. It could be many things..and very possibly related to his infection. Could be an infected ingrown hair or a cyst. I have to think if she thought it was dangerous in March, she would've had it tested. I was always told, if it moves and isn't attached, it's a good sign. He could have an underlying skin condition that has been dormant for awhile and everything became inflamed at once. How long for the results? Probably tomorrow? Give him big woof from Jake..and a :hug: from me..

I haven't had experience with this, Phil, but I know you must be worried with waiting til the tests come back! Just from the info you've given and the meds the vet rx'd, seems like she thinks it is something highly treatable. We'll be thinking of Buster and hoping for the best outcome/news possible.

Poor Buster!! I hope that the lump is related to the infection/acne and is simply treated and the wait to find out the results will pass quickly for you......my thoughts will be with you and Buster :hug:

Oh man, poor Buster. I totally get how you're feeling. The test she did with the tape is called a Cytology I think. Blue had it done too.
Hopefully this will be the last time for a loooong time Buster's put on antibiotics. Did you ask your vet what can be done to prevent this?

@Sherry

She said it could take up to 3 day but may be today. I thought that was it too and was told that if it moves and isn't attached it's a good thing. I'm sure you're right that it's part of the infection.

Thank you. You're right that's what it's called a Cytology and she aspirated the move able blob under the skin. She said the infection is caused by the big hippo lips they have and everything eventually ends up on their chin. Like we should have private waiters standing in waiting for them after every drink of water to towel them dry!! We wipe his mouth off as much as possible after every meal but drinking water is different. I mean we get to it as much as possible to prevent rivers and lakes from forming in our kitchen but it's impossible to do it every time. :)

:pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray: praying really hard along with you that it is all just an infection and you can be told what it causing it.

BTW -- the picture does not work, all I see is a little square - when I click nothing opens.
