Hello everyone, I have an almost 1 year old male ebd... I maintain health insurance for him and it is rather costly although has paid for itself.. ( $100.00 monthly) I am wondering, Is there an age that hip dysphasia begins to affect ebd's more? like after 1 year.. around 2 and a half ect. I have 2 reasons for this question. Number one is, I would breath a lot easier knowing this most likely will never effect my puppy and two. it is an added part of his health insurance that brings the payment up $35.00 more, monthly. I am wondering after a certain age. may I be fairly sure that this will never affect him? I take him on nice walks here in South Florida ( but now with spring and summer with temps over 80 I won't be able to as much) and we run. he loves to chase me where I live as well as chase thrown toys. frisbees ect. I am thinking this is great exercise but just wondering about this hip dysphasia thing. Thanks everyone

I was wondering which pet insurance do you have for your EB . I am picking up my EB in a couple of weeks when he turns 8 weeks .

i am not sure if it can develop at a certain age.... Banks was diagnosed with it at around 8 months and is perfectly fine.

I'm fairly sure that during a physical exam when your vet checks the hips they can see if they are nice and tight or fairly loose, I think if they are good and tight you probably need not worry. Especially at this age.

Maybe sheshistory can give more insight on this.

Oliver was diagnosed a couple of months ago and he is 2 but he started having problems with it around 1 1/2 years old. My vet said he should not have it at such a young age so it's more likely due to poor breeding. She didn't recommend surgery for him at this time because if she replaces the hip (along with a knee that is prone to popping out) he'll get arthritis and if we just leave it and treat it with pain relieve when needed and glucosomine he'll get arthritis so we are opting for treating the symptoms and keeping him comfortable and low activity levels. Which is easy to do with a bulldog!!!

Hi there - first, almost ALL bulldogs have SOME degree of hip dysplasia but they are able to manage because they carry so much weight in front and so little in the back. So, for most bullies, hip issues manifest themselves in creakiness in the hind legs as they get older.

My youngest bulldog, Truman, had a very serious hip problem. These are typically diagnosed in the first year of life since the dog will do certain things like not want to stand a lot, limp, etc. However, to your question, you can't really KNOW it will never affect him but, by now, your vet or orthopedic specialist should be able to give you a good idea if his hips are loose or not...but again, most EB's have loose hips and they get by just fine. Also many EB's with loose hips go on to have knee problems (torn ACL) because they are compensating for their hip joint.

I hope that doesn't paint too bleak a picture but I hope it's helpful!

Not all bulldogs will get hip dysplasya. It depends on their breeding, weight, activity level and activities. Dogs who carry too much weight will have a greater risk of joint problems. Mabel is 4+ years old and has a lot of problems, but (knocking on wood) hip, dysplasya is not one of them. :whew:I once had a boxer who loved to attack a tire swing in our back yard. He destroyed his hips and could barely walk when he was a senior dog. None of my bullmastiffs had hip dysplasya, but I checked the breeding of their parents and found that they were rated OFA good or excellent. :2thumbs: While that was no guarantee of their puppies' prognosis, it was a good start. If you are concerned, you might want to contact your breeder to find out if it is a problem in the lineage of your dog. But for sure, I would work on keeping him fit and at a healthy weight.

Thanks everyone first to Bigrod48 I have trupanion... I got it as a promo thing ( free) for the first month from my vet... Usually when purchasing from a breeder you will have to take him to be checked out within 48 hours and that is where I first obtained it ( my old vet) I did speak with my vet today and she said ( don't quote me) that after 2 years the hips FUSE ? I don't know if thats the correct word but something along those lines and she said they usually do an X ray at around a year and 3/4 and can give me a rating on the status of his hips at that time. A friend of mine ( breeder but someone I DIDN"T purchase my puppy from said HER vet says treat the dog and NOT the X ray ( sheshistory is correct ) My puppy was welped on April 22 of 2012 he is 55 lbs and has had a few problems like parvo.. even thou he was vaccinate and boosted ( Merial Phamacuticals) and also recently had a UTI. To Bigrod48 I think health insurance is very wise owning a ebd I was told Trupanion doubles their premium after a year but so far they have paid out to me close to 2k for my puppy.. He came from a breeder in Missouri ( my vet said Missouri is home of the puppy mill ) but I do know 2 people who purchased dogs from them as well as I spoke with an inspector from the AKC and she told me they run a great place there ( shady acres kennel) I do not know about his blood lines . all I know is all his relatives on the tree thing from ACK are registered. I think purchasing an ebd is a crap shoot . you can get a healthy dog or end up with bad luck but I love my bullie and I would sell my soul to make sure he is happy and healthy... Thanks everyone
