I'm reposting this on behalf of Benedict2013 from the puppy social group

I had to take Benedict to the emergency vet clinic, my vet was closed today, I'm so upset, worried and confuse that I can't think straight, Benedict started limping this morning from his right back leg causing him to walk side ways, I couldn't think of what or how he did this the only thing was that he's been trying to jump up the couch, I placed one of the big cushings on the floor so he won't land on the floor if he falls.

I rushed him to the vet, they didn't do X-rays just a fiscal exam gave me pain killers for a week and told me there is probably nothing broken since he's not crying he's putting weight on it, but not like normal, the vet said something about the growing plates to watch him over the next 2-3 days for worsening and then come back???? Please has this happend to any of you? What should I do? I'm so worry I'm leaving next Saturday on a business trip and Benedict is gonna have to stay with my mother I hate to leave him like this. Any advice will be welcome.

Thank you

I'm going through the exact same thing with Hershey right now, could be an ACL :/ they arent sure... but lots of kennel time, and pain meds to keep him from being so active around his sister (Make him sleepy) it sucks...but its the only way to see if he gets better w/out an expensive surgery :/

This happened a couple of months ago to our puppy, he had a small crack in his growth plate, typically this requires surgery as without surgery it can lead to permanent damage and deformity if not corrected, the only way to know for sure is by Xray, I think you should call your vet ASAP, get an xray, if the vet can't determine if it is a growth plate crack/fracture, then see a surgical specialist who can tell. We were lucky, Thatcher's crack was so minimal that surgery was not needed, he was on pain med's for a few days and stopped limping within a week. Limit your dogs activity, no stairs, no jumping, etc...... but please get an X-ray.
Best wishes

For your own peace of mind I would go to your vet and get an xray. Only way to be sure right now it's just a sprain. Sounds like you need to know ASAP so you can make decisions and give instructions on his care. Hope he's okay

I went through this with my Lucy when she was a puppy. Unfortunately she needed surgery. When the vet references the growth plate he/she is probably trying to rule out a tibial crest avulsion. Like Kahnefan5 mentioned sometimes the only option is surgery.

Since you are traveling and you seem concerned you may want to get an xray to rule out anything more serious. My vet was able to spot the fracture on an xray and referred me to an otho/surgeon for a second opinion. They took her in for surgery later that afternoon. If it is this you don't want to delay treatment.

I hope this is just a sprain. Feel free to reach out if you need any more information.

I am going through the same thing now and have gone through it a couple of times too. The best is you get him properly checked by the vet, I usually always take him in just to make sure everything is fine. The last times it has always been some minor bruising or something related to soft tissue, due to his rough playing and jumping. He always became better after a couple of days, one time he was limping so much I thought his leg was broken, took him in immediately, the doctor didn't find anything strange and the next morning it was gone. I hope your puppy has nothing serious, these babies just start limping sometimes. I remember my dog sitter told me once that during their puppyhood they grow asymmetrically, which can cause them to limp. There are so many options that the best thing to do is talk to your vet and make sure everything is fine.

Oh poor guy and you, I went through this with Dozer, he wouldn't even put weight on his paw, and cried every time he moved , we had an X-ray done and nothing was broken, it was a bruised paw, he got pain medication for 4 days. I would take him to the vet and have an X-ray just to be safe and to know for sure what it is , and also because your going away. You'll only worry while your away if you don't know what it is, and if its nothing serious then you can relax while your away.
