Ftse had Cherry eye at the age of 4 months we were advised to have it tacked back and no removed due to the dry eye later on, but then that can happen anyway in this breed when at the time Ftse had it, I remembered his litter brother had both eyes and they were huge and this was at eight weeks old and she advised on getting them cut out just tacke along with a few on here so I opted for the tacking and all has been fine so far he was operated on in April 2012.

So which ever you choose I hope all goes well for you, it is a hard decision which way to go.

Sounds like your vet was just explaining it in a way you can understand easily. I am a nurse so my vet will use medical "jargon" and know I will understand...I sometimes forget that others might need it explained simply.
The excess skin and too much gland will most likely be caused by and partly the over stretched ligament
so yes it makes sense because to me it reads the same just different terminology xx

picture a balloon filled with water tied to an elastic/rubber band...stretch the band and let go..the balloon will bounce back into place. The more its stretched the less bouncy it is.
now picture the same balloon tied to a piece of stretchy string...not as bouncy as the elastic....stretch it and the balloon will pull on the string more and not bounce back to where it was. That's how a Cherry Eye works...the more it pops and stretches the gland/ligament/3rd lid/skin the less likely it is to go back to normal so eventually the only cure is removal. But if caught before its over stretched and tacked back it can be successful and stay back xx

:) yeah that does make sense :p I'm an LPN so I understand like the labs n blood work values, nutrition, etc but when he started talking about 3rd eyelids n glands I was like uh huh let me record u so I can decode later!! Lol yeah hers popped out first at 3 months so it was 3 months of almost daily cherry eyes but everyone said wait n do all surgeries with the spay (she needed a lotttttttt done) n I'm glad I did :) thank u !!!

I saw an eye specialist when Moe had a cherry eye and was faced with the same options, remove or tack... removing will eliminate a tear duct, probably requiring administering eye drops for life, but no worries of the cherry eye returning. I opted for the tacking, and after a year and a half, it never returned, and he regained full tear production within a few weeks after the procedure.

Thanks everyone,
We have an appt on Thursday from a vet that does both procedures, so we will see what she says. Our regular vet stated that their office does not do the removal procedure but she has a bully and she choose to do the removal and was pleased with the results. Haven't had any vet tell me the removal was illegal just that they don't do that procedure, it is considered old school. I felt like my vet was telling me removal would be best w/o actually telling me that, if you know what I mean. We are continuing to lubricate it and hope to make it to Thursday. Will update then

By many names depending on the situation?
Hello,

Yes, cherry eye can happen. While the 1st choice might be to tack, if the option is likely that another operation will be needed in the future, the other removal surgery might be better.

I know several people who had the removal surgery done and none of them had any problems with the dry eye issue.

Good Day~

UPDATE
Well, I took Motley today to another vet and am so thankful I did, God provided a vet who not only is very knowledgeable with English bulldogs but has 2 bullies and he graduated from Univ of Georgia, home of the Bulldogs! So he definitely felt like removal was best option so we will have her surgery and she will be spay at the same time all on Monday. I felt very comfortable with him, he thoroughly wanted me to know all the options with the tuck procedure as well as the removal. so she will go in on Monday and have her little eye taken care of, I am so thankful for all the knowledge here on this site, thanks ladies, will post on Monday with update
