Bugsy and Lizzy
Hello
My name is Fred and we have a english bulldog named Bugsy and one named Lizzy. I dont know if anyone can help in this situation but Bugsy tore his knee up and needs tplo surgery. Unfortunately my vet cant do it and the only place that he referred us to was K State veterinary school. We cant afford that. I am hoping that someone knows of any foundations or organizations that can help us with him. I dont want him to be put down because we cant afford the surgery and i hate to give him to a rescue because we cant afford to do it ourselves but if i have to send him away to save his life i guess thats what i will do. I guess i am just looking for direction or emotional support on what to do. Dont know how tobreak it to the kids they just know he is hurt at this point. Does anyone know of a bulldog specialist in Kansas that might take payments? Thanks

Oh, Fred! I'm so sorry to hear about Bugsy and his injury. :( What a sad thing. I wish I could help, but my bulldog doctor is in Texas and I have no idea if she could help or not.

Winston and I will say our prayers for Bugsy. Please hang in there!

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this!! First of all I can't believe for one second that there is only one vet in your area that can do that surgery. Start calling around and getting quotes. Contact your local bulldog rescue and ask who they use. Also, look into care credit - it's a low interest way of spreading the cost and a LOT of vets take it!!

Don't give up hope yet. Others with more experience of this surgery will come along with suggestions soon.

There isnt a vet in my area at all that can do it. I am in rural Western Kansas, Hays area. Closest place i could find is K State and their estimate is $2400-$2600 without complications.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Bugsy is hurt. I live in Canada, so have no information on vets in the States, but wanted to send my support, prayers and hopes that you find a way to help your guy. I have seen other people on here talk a bout a credit card that pays for vet costs. Hopefully someone on here can give you the name of the card or some advice and information on it. Have you tried calling other vets near to you? Maybe in the next town , or did you ask the K State vet school if they would take payments for the surgery? I hope it works out for you. Good luck. Please keep us posted

Me again. Care credit is a good idea. We have Care Credit for our animals, although I try not to use it very often.

I looked for some resources for you to look at, and I would start here.

What is required by care credit? This economy cost me my business (which is why i am in this position) so i dont exactly have good credit at the moment.

I'm not sure what their requirements are. however, they did extend credit to me over ten years ago when my husband and I were living pretty much paycheck to paycheck. You can try, and all they can do is say no. We'll find some way to help Bugsy yet. http://www.carecredit.com/

Yes..try care credit. You can apply online or in most vets offices. They will ask how much you need. You do make payments..but it is interest free for 2 years max. They structure the payments to be paid off when your time period is up.
I so hope a suitable arrangement can be made. Maybe there is a teaching vet school that can do this. I admire how much you love Bugsby...he is a lucky Bully indeed. Please don't give up.

I have care credit. That said, really shop around. I was told once that knee surgery for my dog would cost so much. It depends a lot on the economy. No one around here charges more than 600.00 once you get the appt made. Seriously, the only person I have heard of who charges more is at some emergency clinic. If you end up having to drive a ways, it will be worth it. That said, of course be sure and check with people as to reputation of the surgeon. The expensive one we checked out was the bad one it turns out.

A sad update. We have had no luck finding a home for him that can afford to do the surgery. KState would do it for 60% down and take payments on the rest with approved credit but we dont have credit (not bad credit just no credit) much less be able to come up with the 60%. We are being forced to have him put down this Weds. Thanks for the support to those who sent well wishes. Thanks

Before you put him down, check with bulldog rescue in Ohio. They may have an idea of where you can get help, or ,ay be able to take him for you!

Why would you have him put down because you can't afford the surgery ..... you need to contact all your local bulldog rescues. I am confident that one of them would take him!!!!
ChanelnBrutus .. do you have any contacts in this area ... Hays, Kansas.

Yes, pls consider giving him to an eb rescue. He's a healthy boy, full of life. If you're more comfortable, pls pm me with the details and I'll get a hold of someone that can take care of him. Please please please cancel that appointment on wed. We'll get that boy the surgery he needs.
