I don't have any that have hip dysplasia, but it is fixable through surgery. Usually the vet can tell when they are puppy's that they have this, but sometimes I think it can happen later in life too. Someone will be along soon that has more experience with this. How old is your bulldog?

When they have this condition in the parents it's usually bred into the litter, bully's with hip problems should not be bred.

None of my 6 Bulldogs have had hip problems. You asked what age Bulldog health problems became apparent, my experience has been somewhere between 2-5 years old.

Are you taking him to a vet that know bulldogs well? Many bulldogs are diagnosed with hip dysplasia by vets who are unfamiliar with the breed when it is actually just the normal physical makeup of many EB. I would be very hesitant to treat for dysplasia without him being seen by a bulldog specialist.

Make sure your vet knows the breed. Bulldogs are special, and have unique parameters. Especially with hips/knees. Never let your bullie know a moment of pain, especially with an unnecessary surgery. I had a novice vet diagnose my boy with "horrific hip dysplasia and knee issues" at 10 months. Reality: hind left luxating patella. That surgery was necessary - but hips are within normal and expected bulldog morphology. Just make sure your vet knows bulldogs.

Molly was perfect-- well besides the stench of corn chips and yeasty paws from the crappy food I used to feed her-- until she was 3.5 and she got a skin infection. Then she was perfect another 1.5 years and she developed dry eye and gets heat rashes. She is still 95% optimum health and she is 5 years old.

Basically you never know when something will crop up. But most of the time it is when they are over a year old. Especially with seasonal allergies.

sheshistory can tell you about hip displaysia, but from my understanding it can be apparent very early on, but the bones do not actually grow into their full place or until they are several months of age. But Jill can tell you more and explain that better.

Hi there, my bully developed symptoms of hip dyplasia by 10 weeks. His hip actually popped out of socket. If you read the article at the link, it will give you more info about hip dysplasia but if you have specific questions, please do let me know. The earlier you catch it, the more options that are available to you!

The issues can creep up at anytime .... some are there at birth and other appear after about a year. Some issues can be control by feeding a great food however, others will be addressed with meds or surgery.

Our boy had all the breathing issues and needed surgery to reduce his palet, he had horrible allergies to grass, weeds, molds and rice which required wiping his paws and giving Benedryl daily. Then while playing at daycare with an Italian Mastiff he torn his ACL... another surgery.

Our girl... she has allergies to grass, trees and chicken and she has fused vertebra which is addressed via pain management.

We have never had pet insurance, it used to be cost prohibitive for Bulldogs. Now I've heard there are some reasonable plans. I am going to get an OEB next spring.
