Hi – My Truman had TPLO surgery December 5, 2011. I’ll give you the short version of my experience – although the long version is posted somewhere on this site. :)

After confirmation of the ACL tear, I was given two options – they referred to them as the “cheap” and “expensive” surgeries. What drew me to the TPLO was that, the orthopedist said Truman would be walking, not great of course, but walking on the leg right after the surgery. Where as the other surgery, he would “favor” it more and it may take a month or so before he’d feel it was stable. Because my Truman had a slew of other ortho issues, I went for the TPLO as I felt it would give him the most stability.

I will say that I was very much in doubt of Truman walking right after surgery, but Truman did just that. He strutted his stuff right out of the vet’s office. He was a wobbly, but he was definitely using his back leg. I will also say that he had some complications i.e one of the screws backed out and cause a very large seroma. However, in the end Truman has done very well and once the seroma cleared up, he was back to his normal self within no time. I think the hardest part for me was trying to keep him “calm” and not active for such a long time. Since he could walk on the leg, he was wanting to move around and play gladiator with his brothers. While the vet gave me some information as to recovery, the most beneficial thing I found was this booklet – found here… http://www.topdoghealth.com/faq/documents/TPLO_E-Booklet.pdf. I also signed up for the week to week progress emails which helped remind me where Truman should be at each part of the process.

Let me know if you have any more questions! Be happy to answer them.

We just did acl surgery but not a tplo so can't help specifically help on this exactly. Have you gotten a 2nd opinion by chance? Not to say the first is wrong but before any big surgery I would def recommend getting another opinion. Also be sure to use a good, well known bulldog vet. If you don't have one I am sure we can help you find a good one. Did they get a good X-ray of the other knee as well? I guess usually one goes out due to the other having been injured previously causing them to favor the one that actually tears. Something my first vet didn't do but my 2nd did before surgery. Please ask any questions you specifically have, willbe glad to help as much as i can.

You've gotten some great advice so far - my dog Bentley had 2 TPLOs. One thing that the surgeon (and I assume you're having it done by an orthopedic specialist but if you're not - do!) told me and did come to pass, was that once one leg goes, the other has an 88% chance of following. I know that's not something you want to hear right now as you face surgery but keep it in mind.

My Bentley did great after both surgeries and was a healthy, running bully for the rest of his days with his two, bionic knees. :)

If you have other specific questions, let me know too!
