So Otis's cherry eye hasn't gotten any better - for the first time it can not be massaged back in - bringing him to the vet tomorrow to get ointment and discuss options any options? This vet will not do the tuck option because he feels it's not a resolve in a lot of cases. Anyone have the gland cut? I'm torn how to proceed want my boy to be okay. They said with the cut possible dry eye but in their experience does not occur in most cases

My vet suggested pushing it back in and putting back into "place" But he still gave me eye drops for the first few weeks to use and told me there would be a chance her eye would get really dry and would require medication everyday. This was about 6 months ago. Shes been fine since no problems.

We were doing that but it has been out for 24 hours and we can't get it back in. Sometimes it goes back on its own after a nap but it's never stayed out this long, getting really red which they say doesn't hurt unless it gets dry.

Vet visit this morning, we received the ointment for his eyes and ultimately we will probably have to have surgery for cherry eye. Will see how the ointment goes. We just switched vets and I am so happy I did - this vet delivers English Bulldogs was a former owner and knows a ton - even attend seminars on them. So glad I found him and he is within 15 miles of us - how lucky is that!

He said we should have the eye surgery at the same time we spay Otis which sounds like a good idea if it comes to that. The surprising thing he said though is we should have had him spayed 4 months ago and Otis is only 6.5 months old. That was shocking to me since I have always heard after 6 months and sometimes even longer.

Again, just wondering has anyone had the gland removed to resolve the cherry eye issue. From what I've read that gland produces about 30% and even with the removal the 70% has had great results (coming from our vet) to not have dry eye.

Thanks for any feedback! Happy Friday to all....

My vet tucked it back in but it later popped out so did the surgery and cut it. That was over 2 years ago and she is fine. I put over the counter drops for dry eye in every few days to be on the safe side and it looks great! Good luck. If you can't get it in and it keeps popping out go for the surgery...Make sure the vet is bulldog savvy!

My foster, Bella, will have to have surgery for her cherry eye at the same time as she is spayed. I don't really know much about cherry eye up until now, so I'm doing a lot of reading on it. I'm as fascinated as you to find out what people's experiences have been!!

My vet put my Snowy under (sleep), then he tucked it back in with his own procedure, then provided the treatment. Hasn't popped out since, been about 6 months.

Moe had a cherry eye tucked... I took him to an eye specialist, and she pretty much summed up the options as such; From her tucking experience, she has been 85% successful on the first try, and the procedure is repeatable. Cutting the gland is 100% successful, however, you are eliminating 33% of the eye's tear production, requiring eye drops for the rest of their life.

I elected to go for the tuck, and it stuck on the first try... it took about a month for his tear production to fully come back, but it did.

Kazzy is Bella's always out or does it still go back in?

Telly thank you very much for the feedback - much appreciated, glad you had a positive situation with the tuck.

Bella's cherry eye is always out .... she was an owner surrender and we've only been fostering her for about 4 weeks. At her vet check, the vet said it had been out for a long time. Luckily there are no ulcers but the eye itself is scratched because of the dryness of the eye. When we got her it just was oozing green pus, and so we got meds for that and used it in conjunction with these eye drops that the vet commented on ... he said they were one of the best you could get off the shelf.

We thought we had it under control and so stopped the ointment and she has been great for about a week, but I just got home from work now and it was very slightly green and gooey again so I'll have to put her back on the ointment maybe and possibly go to the vet to pick up more of it. Was hoping we had it beat!! :wallbang:
