Cherry eye

ughhh Winnie Cooper has cherry eye ... anybody have any experience with this?

I have see some videos on youtube teaching how to fix it.... any thoughts ?

Only one of my bullies ever got a cherry eye, and it went away before we ever got surgery or anything- I lasted for just one day. How long has Winnie Cooper had it?

I know we have discussed some cherry eye here before, just punch in cherry eye in the search box on the forum pages, and any threads about that should pop up. One of our members posted a video too.

Hi, I posted a video showing a temporary fix for Cherry Eye. You can pop the gland back in and sometimes that's all you have to do. Other times it will pop back out. How long has your baby had Cherry Eye? Is it in one or both eyes? A lot of time, it can be caused by playing too rough....also dust and dirt....sort of like when we have allergies.
You can try to put the gland back in place...but it might pop back out eventually. before you take your baby to the vet for surgery...I suggest you wait a couple weeks. It looks awful, but they are not in any pain! If it is only one eye, wait a week or two to see if the other eye pops also. It usually will within a few weeks of the other. I always wait awhile....I would rather put my dog out once for surgery, than to have to do it again a few weeks later for the other eye. Just wait and see what happens....sometimes, it will go back in on it's own and not pop back out again....or it might go back in and pop out in a month or two. It varies by each individual dog.
If you do take your dog for the surgery...DO NOT LET THEM REMOVE THE GLAND! It is cheaper, but later in life....they will develop dry eye and you will have to give them eye drops to keep their eye lubricated. Make sure the Vet does the pocket technique.

You can put them back in if you know what your doing , not an easy task . If you manage to get it back in you'll need to keep him/her calm (crated) no heavy play for a few days . As soon as they get over excited the blood starts pumping & it will pop again . You may have to repeat several times , it may or may not stay in . If all else fails call around to find a vet that is willing to snip it out . Make sure the vet is experienced with bulldogs and has done the clip in the past . I wouldn't advise having it tacked , they usually come undone and multiple surgeries will cause scaring . Tacking requires them to be put out where the clipping is a local snip and less bleeding involved . There hasn't been any conclusive research that proves clipping causes dry . I know of Bullies that have never had cherry eye that have had dry eye . Good Luck

My dog Bertie has had surgery on both of her eyes and has not had any problems. My cocker Spaniel has also had cherry eye surgery in both eyes. Both of my dogs have had the pocket technique done. My grandmother used to breed EB's and from experience, I stand by my statement of not taking out the gland. It is true, that removing the gland is easier. My Vet who specializes in English Bullies also tells clients not to remove the gland, for the same reason I stated.

I bought / co-owned 3 bitches that ended up with cherry eye through out the yrs . The one girl was taken to a Bulldog Specialist who guaranteed the eye , claimed they had never had one come undone . Several of our mentors who have been involved in the breed for more then 40 yrs as well as many other seasoned breeders have said they come undone . Instead the vet insisted the gland should not be clipped as it causes dry eye . The first time she was put under she almost died , turned blue and guess what it came undone . Second try guess what ?? It came undone . Third time now looks horrible so much scar tissue the eye is pushed back . Had to seek advice from an eye specialist who said there is nothing they can do except trim back some tissues . That would mean putting her under again . On the 3rd girl we found a vet that does the snip , it's a local anesthetic , a quick snip , less bleeding and quicker recovery time . She's 8 now and has no problems , on the other hand the girls that were tacked do have dry eye . We have another older girl that has never had cherry eye that has dry eye . I've done tons & tons of research over the years , consulted with many many long time breeders . There have been no clinical studies that supports /concludes sniping the gland causes dry eye . Even so anytime you put a Bully under anesthetic your taking a risk !!

Cherry eye can be caused by a variety of things it's primarily genetic , puppies in general have weaker muscles and underdeveloped tissue . If cherry eye runs in the lines chances are your puppy/puppies will pop especially during hard play or rough housing . Novice should avoid attempting to put the gland back in as this can cause more harm then good . Find a seasoned Bulldogger in your area who can show you how to do this hands on .
