Update on my battle with Coccidia:

April 16: found out both Schultz and Sophie (Weimaraner) have Coccidia because I had to get a fecal test to maybe board them so I could maybe go on a vacation.....so surprised that they failed poop test and have Coccidia as neither of them have or had any diahrrea or even soft stools ....so they each did 10 course of Albon and we waited 7 days to recheck poop..... Failed still Coccidia

May 3: another 10 day course of Albon with the addition of metronidazole on the first day of medication (Sherry suggested this to me and my vet hadn't heard of using this for Coccidia but figured ok let's try it)......wait 7 days and recheck poop.....failed

Good thing I didn't make any reservations......have scrubbed the house down with bleach and treated the grass where they poop with a diluted ammonia wash trying to kill the microscopic Protozoa that I can't see but feel as though it's everywhere

May 26: agree to 5 day course of a high dose of metronidazole (even though I don't like the possible side effects) Wait 7 days recheck poop .....dropped off poop this morning....

So today is the recheck day...7 days after they did a 5 day course of metronidazole (at the highest dose) and I dropped off the samples before I went to work....but yesterday my Weimaraner developed an issue that I'm trying really hard not to freak put over...just yet....before I consented to the 5 day course of a high dose of metronidazole I discussed its possible side effects the scariest being neurotoxicity that develops 7-12 days after the first dose....vet assured me she's used this drug a lot even at this dose and never seen an adverse effect....so I consented ....well since yesterday afternoon my normally graceful weim is walking like she's stoned (symptom of neurotoxicity) ....am waiting to hear results of poop test and give a status report on the weim to the vet....but all I can think about is I poisoned my baby and she's probably still got Coccidia so I did it for nothing....and am waiting to see if baby Schultz starts walking funny..... Thanks for listening as I really am trying not to completely lose it before I even know what's going on for sure.....

Oh my gosh, hoping for good results today. :( desertskybulldogs. Wish I could help. Have you asked maybe to see a specialist? Our get a second opinion? Maybe call and ask for advice from other good vets? Usually doesn't happen but some vets will email or give advice over the phone.

Well we failed again :(.....my vet called another vet before calling me and he suggested an anti parasitic that is used on horses (as this is what he does for the tough cases)...my vet is coming by my house this afternoon to examine the weim and we will discuss our options.....I know I've got to clear the Coccidia from their systems because it's depleting their overall health but i'm scared to death of the drugs.....both vets don't think the metronidazole is the cause the weim's "drunken gait" but my vet would like to see if something else is going on.....we will see....keep those prayers coming I so appreciate the support.......

Wow ever since you got this I have done some online searching and from what I could see it is so hard to get rid of and very contagious. I knew it was common in puppies but I think that is puppies bred in large kennels, simply for the reason stated above, those large kennels cannot get rid of it either.

I hope we can find the cure all and I know that many cattle meds work great for dogs so I hope they can help!
