And I'd like to officially call for an end to this horrible rash of leg injuries we've had lately! Step carefully, bullies!

Maybe we should develop a Bully Yoga for balance!

Jenn, I am sorry to hear the news and SO SOON. Cutty will do fine with the crate. He will most likely want to just lay around anyway and not be bothered, so this will be his little space. Give him a kiss and hug for me.

Oh no, I was hoping Cutty wouldn't need surgery. But it will be okay! I've been very impressed by how well Oliver's recovery is going and we aren't even at 2 weeks since surgery.
As for crating, etc - we have a large crate for Oliver that he normally loves and would take naps in throughout the day. It's big and roomy BUT since the surgery, he hasn't wanted to go in it...at all. So we have him in our bedroom (where his big doggie bed is and where he normally sleeps at night anyway) with a baby gate closing off the room. It has worked out beautifully because he can stretch out more than in the crate, plus he has options as to where to lie down in there - his dog bed, on some blankets I put down on the floor, or simply on the carpet.

It can be stressful, especially that first week - and the biggest thing is to remember to be patient. Since I am living this situation right now, please do NOT hesitate to use me as a sounding board. If I can be of any help to you, I'll gladly do so.
Good luck to Cutty!

Oh crap Jenn... poor baby Cutty :(
Maybe you should crate Miila instead of Cutty. She is the instigator, isn't she? LOL

Aw, man - sorry the news isn't better! Is Cutty having the TPLO or a different surgery? Also, I hope the surgeon let you know once one knee goes, the other is likely to follow (something like 80%, which stinks!).

But luckily, it is a very common procedure since SO many dogs tear ACLs so Cutty's surgery and recovery will hopefully be very smooth.

It sounds like your vet recommended surgery because the movement of the joint would eventually cause crippling arthritis. I know it's a hard thing to deal with since Cutty is 6.5 but I guess one way to look at it that torn ACLs and bad hips and things like that used to be a death sentence for dogs. Thanks to innovations in veterinary medicine, we are able to help maintain our dog's quality of life, or in many cases, give them a new lease on life. This is the way I tried to view everything we went through with Truman and Bentley (including the hit on the wallet).

If you have any specific questions, please let me know! Bentley had both knees done with TPLO but I know there are newer innovations now and Cutty's treatment might vary with his age.

Good luck Jenn - you're not alone!
Thanks Jill! I am the worst cuz I cant for the life of me remember what he called it but no it isnt the TPLO surgery. The lessor of the surgeries I think. He didnt call it tta or tplo of course that would be too easy for me to remember. lol Thought he said eco as the start of what he said. ugh.... worst mama ever. haha Will get more details before surgery. He said Cutty is in pain with the grinding in there. Said they will most likely have to scrape his meniscus. He is also going to xray Cutty's other (good) knee while he is put under. The first vets office didnt and he says he always does because not only does the other maybe go bad usually the tears are caused because the other knee was already hurt and he was over compensating onto this (bad) leg and maybe slipped or tweaked it causing the injury. He said most times this is the case. (SO hoping it isnt tho)

Maybe you should get it out and start using it -- before the surgery? Keeping him calm and still is going to be difficult, isn't it? Can they give you doggie downers so he doesn't rip out the stitches, etc.? Cutty is an active pup...I'd be afraid he's injure the surgical site and then you'd have to start all over again.....

Good luck, Jenn. I am delighted that you have confidence in your vet. That means everything.

Edited to add: you cannot feel bad about that crate. They will sense it. If you think it's awful or prison or not fun, they will pick that up. You have to think "This crate is the best place in the world for you now and it's wonderful." Get a new pillow or some fun bedding to help your mid adjust, maybe?
True, whatever we do I will celebrate with a new bed etc and make him think he is being spoiled. Good idea. Since this injury Cutty is more relaxed since he gets busted everytime he goes to try and wrestle Miila. Poor guy, just wants to play.

Oh no, I was hoping Cutty wouldn't need surgery. But it will be okay! I've been very impressed by how well Oliver's recovery is going and we aren't even at 2 weeks since surgery.

Then maybe the bedroom will work. I will have to pick up the stairs to our bed so he doesnt attempt to go up. The room isnt huge really and can be baby gated. Plus there is the slider to the back right off there so he can do his business easier maybe.

Oh crap Jenn... poor baby Cutty :(

Hey, I didn't know Cutty had a torn ACL.. did he have a luxating patella, or was it an injury? Poor baby!! I will be praying for him, he is so strong.. he will do just fine
I think he injured it somehow. He plays rough and one day after being out he was limping. Either happened outside or maybe slipped on drool water on the tile or something? Not sure exactly.

Wow Friday, he means business! Nice to see a vet think about how Cutty may be feeling, shows what a good vet he is. Oh sweet Cutty, I will be thinking of you!
I guess they had a bigger surgery scheduled for a bully for that time and they think they need more time for his surgery so they rescheduled. This is why so soon. I hadnt planned on surgery really but I figured as long as I have waited to see if it heals etc, I may as well get it done and start his future asap. If this is the plan, no point in waiting.

Awwww Jen....I'm so very sorry..know you and all of us..we're so hoping for a different path! But..I'm glad you have a vet you like and feel comfortable with. And  FRIDAY!!! Wowzie! As far as carting..I'm retry sure he will ave to be as immobile as possible. Being crated limits any excess activity ad he will probably have the best outcome. I have a great crate you can use as long as you need to..I knowim a ways from you..but could meet you half way??? Also..maybe an Xpen would work..but a whole room is too much space. Let me know !! And  to Cutty and you!!
Becky I love you! You are so cute. I can use this crate we have right now and put it in our room. I too have a gate type of thing for the babies camping so if I need I can get that out. I am thinking our room is so small that he wont be able to do much. If anything can run our gate thing along the whole foot of the bad and that will give him more of a rectangular area with no obstacles like the bed to sneak around.

Oh jenn I'm so sorry cutty needs surgery! But being the positive girl I am, I can't help but point out how happy I am that Dr Kraemer has reported that in general he is a healthy boy and that you liked Dr K so much, I knew you would because I thought he seemed like a wonderful man when I met him and having heard so many wonderful things about him from SCBR :) Will he have to stay overnight?
Yes he really is awesome. Thank you for reminding me of him, for some crazy reason I thought of him as just too far but not so. He will be our regular go to from now on if needed, aside from basic shots etc. He was well worth the 1 1/2 hr drive! :D

Well its official. Has to be out there between 9 and 10. No food after 6, that will be hard. Oh and the surgery will be $600 less than the paper quote they gave. Nice. Headed out to get him a new comfy bed and some chew toys. He knows I think too. :( hopefully in a few months he will forgive me. Lol

Intention is everything! As you are putting him in the car, driving there, etc. Think in your mind something positive! I guarantee he will pick up on that energy, Jenn! I PROMISE YOU.
Here's some ideas for you;
1) Oh Cutty! You Lucky Pup, we are going to a doggie resort and you are going to have an FABULOUS rest and rejuvenation treatment!
2) Yay! We get to go visit Dr. Kneebone and you LOVE the nurses there and all the attention! You are getting a NEW KNEE! Better than any toy anywhere!
3) Mama gets some one on one time to bond with Miila while you relax and enjoy the attention and rest and your brand new knee from the seasoned, trusted professionals!

I know it's hard. I do. I really do. But Try though, ok? I'm telling you, it will make a difference. Positive intent is everything. Picture the perfect dr. visit while you are going there.....and then make it happen. You can do it!

Thanks guys. We r here, just waiting a few minutes until the very is open. Vicaroo1000 your positive attitude does help much. Although I might have a hard time, all I think is how I have never left him anywhere over night ever. But he will be better off when it is all said and done.
